possible nomad purchase
My 2 cents,, Just make sure the P.O.G. was changed,, Thats all Ive heard from 99 owners.. The Nomad is a Great bike,, I came off a 1100 Honda Sabre......The Nomad though Not a Speed demon but is a great long haul bike.I use my Nomad around town with out any problems,, The Sabre is 300lbs lighter and better for around town..
KBB Pricing below 1999 Nomad Retail http://www.kbb.com/motorcycle/retail...0-nomad/232001 Trade in Price + $3610.00 Good shape http://www.kbb.com/motorcycle/trade-...0-nomad/232001 IMO the price sounds ok depending on how it runs etc... Check KBB on the price of your bike.... BUT if the Long hauls are far and few in between and you want QUICK take offs and zip through the twisties,, The Nomad is a bit slower, but can do twisties with some extra work.......Rich

i totally understand that any cruiser for the most part is going to be slower than a crotch rocket. I just dont want my girl on her shadow 750 outrunning me from a light lol. I just like the idea of no money exchanging hands if i can help it. If i do pony up some money i may even buy a sportster. KBB on my bike is around 3k on a trade in actually. So im prolly doing pretty good. My guess they are going to have a hard time selling a bike with 30k on it.

I agree that the 99 was a fantastic bike, and the price seems pretty reasonable to me. I sold my 99 last fall for $5g's, and it had 17K. You'll have about $1000 in V & H pipes, and the JOG install, considerably less if you can do them yourself. Only thing I can add is actually talking you out of the Nomad since your GF rides, you don't need yours for two up. You could still solo it out, or find a nice 1600 Classic for similar money. Saw an 04 with less miles go in the low $4's a few weeks ago on ebay from a reputable dealer. No matter what, you'll like the Vulcan's. I outgrew my go fast days after owning 600 Katana, 750 GSXR, and 900RF-R. 150 mph is fun, but an all day ride, or overnight with your GF/significant other is better.

well one of the things i really like about it is it reminds me of a harley that i liked at the local dealership. It had hard bags on it like the nomad but without the windshield, a seat for solo riding, and some drag bars. It was really sweet looking. Sorta like a muscle touring bike i really liked it.

I believe Kaw will still cover the replacement if the gear fails, even though the bike is 10 years old. I've never owned a '99, but I've picked this up by spending considerable time on this forum.

hey all i ran over to the dealership with the nomad today and had them start her up so i can hear it run and what not. It started up and purred like a kitten. I didnt hear anything that shouldnt be there. I talked to them about the pog and they said they dont believe its ever been replaced. I talked to i think a service guy(the bike was in the garage) i said something about kawa replacing that under warrenty and he said he never heard anything about that before. THat sorta scares me a bit. I did like the bike and the stock sound was pretty beefy. What do you guys think should i go for it or not.

I'll defer to someone who has had the POG replaced. I don't want to spread the wrong information here, especially if it influences someone's decision to buy.

Mama Kaw has replaced the POG up to this point, but won't pay for ANY other damage! At that mileage, and not knowing the history, I'd say replacing it with the JOG/SOG would be mandatory. That is the only weak point of the 99. If you can get the price to where the replacement can be done and be at the $4000 price point, I'd say go for it. I've read to many stories about the POG going out, and the owner getting socked for thousands in repair's. At that point the "deal' on a bike becomes a nightmare. Good luck.

You never know where you might find one of these things at a real bargin, but it does pay to look around. The one you're looking at IMO would be a great price at $3800. with the pog replaced. $3650. without, then do it yourself right away. I got my 2000 Nomad with only 6000 miles and lots of extras (VH pipes, fender guards, tach, chrome covers, F&S goodies, light bar, and more) for $5500.00 drive out. It was at a small local shop that sells many different types of used bikes. He has been around awhile and doesn't handle junk. You might look around for such a shop in your area.
As far as power and speed......After a few mods and some fuel/air management, it's no crotch rocket but mine will push me back HARD through all the gears past a 100. How fast do you want to go? BUT, what she really does well is she makes a great 85 MPH easychair. One up or two, makes no difference. And, again with just a few mods, such as seat alteration and/or sheepskin, road pegs, lowers, etc. all day comfort is not a problem. And she will not complain if you want to run her all day at 65 or 85. Think it over, it's a great long haul bike, but I ride mine daily to work and find it very easy to handle in traffic and at slower speeds if necessary. Haven't found anyone that said they were unhappy with a Nomad. I have heard other bike owners express displeasure after purchasing something else. ![]()

Where's Spirello at?
If you like a single-seat format for a Nomad... check his bike out. It is one of the best looking one-up versions I have seen around. Looks just like you said... a "muscle touring" bike. Very cool looking.

I bought my first bike 4 1/2 months ago and it was a new '08 Nomad. It took a while to get used to the weight but now have over 6,000 miles and love it. If it's not fast enough for ya, then you are breaking an awful lof of laws.

If the bike isn't priced too high, I would say go for it. You might find a newer bike for not a lot of money. If you get the '99 the miles are no problem. If you decide to replace the saddlebag, I think they are in the neighborhood of $500. Not real sure on that figure. I moved up from an '07 Honda VTX1300R which weighs about 130 pounds less than the '08 Nomad I bought. The third day after I purchased my Nomad I went to stop and park. The bike fell over on the left side and trapped my leg under it. Broke my ankle and my twisting and moving my leg to get it out messed up my ligaments and tendons. Had to have ankle and knee surgery. Make sure you get used to the extra weight.
