If the deer whistles aleart a deer along ways before you get there and they spook and run deeper in the woods, thats what they are supposed to do. Who want them to stand along the road as others have said then when you arive, they spook and run into YOU. Anything i can do to help prevent this is a good thing. Each will have their own opinion which is fine. :-)

The best time to ride is during hunting season. Not a deer to be seen.

Riding in the hill country of Central Texas, I've seen my share of close calls wih deer. If your riding with several buddies or a group, it seems to me the first couple of bikes cause the deer to alert and then panic. Riders 3-4-5-6 better watch out!! ... further back then that and they have typicaly already bolted if they are going to.

Of course there are those that will run along with the bikes a bit before the cross your path (or try to jump over you).

Three us got caught between Rocksprings and Junction as it turned dark a while back. 70 miles to go after dark. It was like a slaughter field as we let the the pickups with cattle guards past .. dodging the carcasses was almost as bad as dodging the live ones. I would guess we saw 50 of them.. dead or alive.

As a lifelong deer hunter I can tell you that like a dog when a deer hears a sound it turns its head to point its ears in the direction of the sound to try and better identify its source. If you had whistles on and you saw the deer did the deer look at you at any point? If not, then there is your answer. Generally the deer you have to worry about don't care about whistles or anything else and those are the young deer. They want to be where mom is no matter what. If you see a doe cross but you don't see anything else cross, SLOW DOWN! The adult will always cross first. You may see a young one standing on the shoulder but if mom is on the other side chances are excellent that it will try to bolt across at the last second because it is afraid of getting separated.
