What's up with Texas? another one this time a vet.
HOA's are the place that nosey, bored people who have inferiority complexes go to gather.
Here are 2 true life examples. 1. I had to replace about a 4x5 section of siding on my house due to some wicking on the bottom and slight rot had begun. I did the job well and you could not tell. Well, the day that I did the repair, the HOA inspector drove past and saw the unpainted wood. I recieved a legal letter stating that I needed to submit a "paint sample" on a peice of wood before I could paint my handywork. Now, keep in mind, I was repainting the house the exact same color it was already. So, I wonder what might have happened if they didn't like the color the house had been for 20 years prior? The sample I sent was the old, nasty, rotted siding. Never heard from them 2. A freind of mine had his boat in his back yard, but it was slightly visible from the street. IT was a nice boat, on a functioning trailer, and was covered. His letter stated that if he didnt' remove it, action would be taken, blah, blah. Long story short, he found a clause in his HOA guidelines that said "yard art is ok and does not need approval". He went down and bought a white porcelain toilet, put it in his front yard and planted Petunias in it.....yep, yard art. Stayed there for 2 years while he fought the boat issue.....HOA gave up. I see... thxs... ain't nuthin round heya' anything like that!
But I have seen gated communities, and what I call communist condos, like in Gaithersburg Md. When I was in year 2 of tee pee living I contracted out to build French raised bed gardens, a shed, and a fence in the CC, at Gaithersburg Md. You couldn't do lots of things.. You must only have what the next guy has no better no worse. The shed could not be tallewr than 6'6" on the top most side, but the ground dropped away. The shed could not be fastend to the building (big brick box) The fence was a stagger board fence, and the shed was to be inside of the fence 6 inches. (big water trap) I began with the raised beds, laying them into the lay of the land about 6 tiers high. The fence had to have a gate with the best side out. I got clever, and built the shed with a solid wall on the inside and the out side was staggerboard. The door way was open and I canterlevered a table next to that opening with a 4x4 cut dove tailed on each end to support the shed. From the outside if you were standing down hill you couldn't see the roof! A rear wall wind brace supported the rear wall tight into the brick, and so there was nothing holding the shed to the building but it was still tight to it. Well I got carried away and made a tomestone gate, and cut a weeping heart, and the owner wanted the frame out, so I made a big acorn with crosshatching and all, for the outside, and he made me turn the gate around, so I made another acorn, and forged up a latch. I think they hung that guy because his garden shed and fence were too good! ![]()
