Yes I hear the darkside's whispers!!!!
Go forth my son and burn that dammned junk right to nuthin. You have my blessin's!

Don't waste any time getting it done, because once them bricks are gone you will have a real ride under yer tail.

Almost any tire is better than these bricks unless you go fer yung chanz or some other cheaper junk than the brick is.

I need to start looking for someone to put a CT on my bike when it is time. Don't have the patience to do it myself. I guess I should start by checking with some independent bike repair shops.

You might have luck at some independent car tire repair shops too. Several people seem to report that as the place they were able to get it done.

That sound like even more fun! Will keep that as a possibility.

Now I just need to wear out my rear tire.

To calculate the diameter of any metric size tire, multiply the width x aspect ratio x 2 x 0.03937 (conversion from mm to inches) then add the rim diameter. After calculating diameter and width you should be able to check clearances accurately.

Examples:

Dunlop SP 5000 195/60 R16
195 x .60 x 2 x 0.3937 + 16 = 25.21 inches diameter
195 x 0.03937 = 7.67" wide

Avon Cobra 180/70 R16
180 x .70 x 2 x 0.03937 + 16 = 25.92"
180 x 0.03937 = 7.08" wide

Stock Bridgestone 170/70 16
170 x .70 x 2 x 0.03937 + 16 = 25.37"
170 x 0.03937 = 6.69" wide

Or if you don't want to mess with the math just go here and put in the tire size and click on the "Specs/Compare" button. Does all the figuring for you.

After doing a ton of research and reading so many threads on this site, I've convinced myself to give the darkside a try when my Cobra wears out within the next several months. The decision I still haven't made is whether to go with the Conti 195/65 R-16 All Season or the SP 5000 195/60 R-16. Pulling my trailer in the hills and mountains would be easier on the Nomad with the 60 aspect ratio than with the 65 but the 65 diameter is very close to what I'm running now with the 180/70 R-16 Cobra. Also, how much difference in handling would there be with the shorter sidewall height vs the taller sidewall? I have months to think it over but would appreciate any experienced feedback I could get. I know and understand why experienced darksiders won't push a newbie into putting a ct on a bike but I just need some honest feedback on this. Thanks.

Mitch, if you plan to take most of your trips pulling a trailer and/or riding two up, I'd get the 60 series tire. If not, then the 65 tire. Handling difference would be negligible between the two.

Scott got the shorter tire and he's please with it so far. He reported that his speedo is 12% instead of 10% off from the factory OEM tire if my memory is right. He has a GPS so correct speedometer reading is moot to him.

I was leaning a little more towards the SP 5000 60 series than the 65. That would definitely increase pulling power in the hills. My new front tire should be in later this week and after mounting it I'll be good for a few more thousand miles, hopefully 4,000 more at least. Then I'll make my move. I know I'll get more feedback from you guys before then. Take care and thanks for the input Brad.

Mitch, I agree completely with Brad's answer. He's dead on, as usual.
