Check the oil regularly. Get yourself a little telescoping extension mirror, sit on the seat, keep the bike upright, and use the mirror to view the oil level in the sight glass.
where can a person find a telescoping mirror these days???

Harbor Freight Tools, Sears are two places that come to mind.

Not that close. Just moving the bike slightly to either side makes a big difference in the sight glass. You want it level, not close to level.
<marquee>Ok, so my 2x4's are bigger than yours!!! </marquee>
Actually I think I added a piece of 1 inch ply under that. It gets it close enough that you will know where it is at and with some experience, you will know where it should be as compared to straight up.

Crap-Another Oil ??? Updated

I have an '05 with 28,000 miles and it uses no oil between changes. Hey I like the idea of a telescoping extension mirror. I always get the wife to sit on the bike and hold it up while I check the level.

Crap-Another Oil ??? Updated

I am 5' 10"/ 145 pounds, bad back, and bad knees, pushin 60 years hard, and i can still hold the ft brake and kneel to see the window and ballance the bike.

just check the oil once a week unless you ain't ridin'. I run full syn and check the oil before most any ride... Sometimes i use a bit, and blow it out the tail pipes when I hit speeds like 95 mph fast getting caught up in traffic...

That means I know that's no statie ahead for a 1/2 mile and I can go as fast as i please, or as fast as a Nomad can go for 1/2 mile.

Did you happen to get new rear gear box oil? That only holds 6.2 oz if you go by the book, and it is too much oil in my opinion.. More like 5.8 to 6 oz is real...

I do mine with each oil change and it is silver/gold with metalics... The book is way wrong on that lasting 24,000 miles...

Im about the same condition as you mac and I can still get down to check it as you described, getting back up takes a bit longer than it used to. ;)

Crap-Another Oil ??? Updated

I always park (in the garage) with a 2x4 under the kick stand. That actually only raises it 1 1/2 inches. To check oil, I do like Mac, kneel on the right side and pull it up level. So far I haven't had it fall on me. Like Ringadingh, it's a whole bunch easier getting down to check the oil than it is to get back up! :(

If you want to get your bike reasonably level make something out of scrap wood like this.

Big stack which measures 7" goes under floorboard/frame on right side, short stack which measures 4" goes under kickstand.

Little overkill for just checking oil.....but comes in handy for that, as well as wiring jobs, adding accessories, etc.
Saves bending over as much. Good for us old farts.

+1 on the level, I use a wheel chock to hold the bike upright and just a slight lean has a major effect. I also get my old but on the ground to look directly at the glass.

Yes, and I can't believe what they charged for 6 ounces of oil!!!
I'm doing my own from now on.

For what it's worth when i ride higher speed with with head wind I will be adding oil in a while. But easy riding of 55- 60 not working the bike real hard it does not use any.

I'm doing my own from now on.

I just buy a qt of mobil 1 gear oil, which does 4 gear oil changes..

I have V&H baggers on which get in the way of the drain bolt, but I let out any shock air, and get my wife to ride pillion solo, and I pull the rear end down hard as I can and that drain bolt clears pretty well.

I use a 1/2 inch 'Fender washer for the fill plug, but once back when I had class I used a silver dollar..

Sometime after that I used a brass token for North American Hunting with a Puma on it, but the fool who stole my 01 got that.

I hope he likes it along with my wife's dirty cloths he stole, as he is behind bars today.

I am thin, weaker than I was, but I can still ballance a bike on one knee to check the oil and hold the ft brake at the same time.

I do leave the side stand out, and flop the bike back down before I release that ft brake.
