I see that some are running only 3 quarts? I think that is to little oil. anyway, i now change the oil every 5K miles no matter what.

You put in
3.7 qts when engine is completely dry (3.5 L), 3.3 qts when filter is removed (3.1 L) 3.1 qts when filter is not removed (2.9 L)

I have never, and will never premeasure the amount of oil I put into the bike. I put 3 quarts in, start the bike for 20 seconds to fill the filter and then top it off to the correct spot on the site glass. Easy and simple and accurate every single time.

Here's how I changed my oil and never worried about how many liters of oil I put in:

Jared, I am with you on the 3 qts, run then top off aproach. I use a wheel chock that gets me to dead level when I do it and I use the drain plug not the spring cover to drain the oil. I almost always use a "skosh" more (maybe a 1/4 of a qt) than 3 qts to get to the high egde of the accepted operating level in the sight glass using this aproach. I think the guys using the spring cover with the bike over on it's side stand are creating the "dry engine" condition and can get away with a little more oil than my aproach.
But a grossly over filled engine will stress piston oil rings and create added parasitic drag on the crank and clutch componets. Running with to much oil is better than to little but it is not good. Use the right amount and check frquently.

I still think the 1500 motor should only take 3.3 qts with a new filter

#8 - Yes. If memory serves me well, I used synthetic blended oil since about 15K km and switched to Rotella T6 (synthetic) at about 20K km. My current bike is an FLHTC and I switched to Mobil 1 20W50 synthetic at 1,600 km. |

Basically, I'm with Jared and using RotellaT6 5/40. I always use the screen plug just to look at screen. Better safe than sorry. When filling bike after complete drain, takes just shy of the gallon. No clutch slips or other problems so far. Curious though, no matter what oil I'm using, still have to add oil between changes. No leaks, no smoke, no noticeable oil in cover and throttle-bodies still clean. Any opinion or normal for everyone?

Don't know where I was getting my numbers from. Directly from the manaul it says.
From an online metric to US standard conversion program. No wonder. I've been putting in way too much oil at 3.7 quarts. Oh well, now I know. roadhawg and others, you might want to re-think your 4 quarts.
