The original story was from a Greenville, SC television station and included that before and after picture. Later pictures showed that it was pulled down I suppose. Anyway, as someone I stated earlier, probably hanging in someone's basement bar now.

I still think the Canadians took it as revenge for not winning the Stanley Cup.

Nope, if we wanted revenge we would have just stolen the cup.

In the later pic it looks more like a Winabago hit and run job.

Steve, it was still there after you left, but it was all in pieces on the ground. Sorry to here about your foot and arm, but you shouldn't be trying to lift such heavy objects.

If he had seen Steve's injuries, he would have a totally different write up. Just saying... :)

Having witnessed the storm that occurred when we were there; it could have easily been torn down with 100 MPH winds.

We saw huge spruce trees torn-out of the ground and tossed about like they were nothing... so a flat-sign surely would have taken a beating.

If it was wind, I bet it was over 100MPH.

Whats the deal on the smaller sign on your sig pic anyway? That little sign says 6,578' and the larger sign said 6,053'.

This makes Mt washington in NH the highest point now ....right 6,288'

I hope it was a wind....

This sign is just the highest point on the parkway. 6578 is at peak of Mt Mitchell, but it is just off the parkway.

My understanding is that Mitchell is 6,684'.

I don't think wind took the sign down. My bet, based on experience, is one of two possibilities. Either some college kids wanted it or some pissed off local wanted some mountain revenge for a wrong he thinks he experienced. If I had to pick just one, it would be the college kids.

I have my doubts about weather also. I have seen some of what winds and tornado's can do and the ones I have seen do not break a sign and leave the broken pieces lying at the base.
