Studies have shown they don't work. Word to the wise (from a person that's had a deer jump over him in broad daylight):

Don't travel in rural areas at night, if you have to, go slower and be very attentive.

Be very attentive riding in rural aras during the day. When you encounter a deer, come to a stop as quick as you can.

Great Idea! I will try that! Should scare away everything and anything in its path!

I live and travel in a rural area, I have hit 2 deer and had one run into the side of my car.
Whistles IMO don't work, seen too many cars with them, that have hit a deer or bear.

I seen a women dead in a car because another women swerved to miss a deer and hit the other women head on. I like to see deer but HIT the damn deer, don't swerve to miss one.

Oh and in case your still thinking about getting them, deer whistles definitely don't work on moose. My dad had them on his car when he plowed into a moose.

I heard every time you've whistled at a deer you've gotten lucky?!!

Hard brakes and horn are about the only defence. More than once while driving a car I turned them back into the woods with a loud constant horn.

Also, nover forget if you see one run across the road up ahead of you it's better than even chance that another one isn't far behind. They travel like rats (in packs).

Deer hear in the same spectrum as humans. If you can't hear it, they can't either.

So what we have learned here today is that clearly deer are just plain irresponsible.

I think we all learned that the deer hunting season is too short and there is a shortage of natural predators.
