Gas mileage on my 2001 Nomad FI

I understand the logic/reasoning behind it, but you'd probably have to draw me a picture for me to fully understand how it works.

Never owned a fuel injected bike.

That's the key here. Carbed bikes are fed fuel via gravity, injected bikes use a pressurized system. Doesn't lend itself well to the use of a petcock.

Gas mileage on my 2001 Nomad FI

I don't take chances and try to fill up when I reach 1/4 tank. This usually works out to about 160-175 miles. Rarely do I wait for the light to come on. Rather stop more frequently and keep the fuel pump "happy" since the fuel keeps it cool. It's a lot cheaper to stop more often than to replace the pump if it fails prematurely.

The carbed 99's do have a fuel pump it's just not in the tank but mounted to the frame under the tank.
