Nice to see another Albertan on here :).

I hope the seat works...second try at finding something comfortable (stock, Mustang, now Day-Long from Russell Cycle Products), sick of spending money on seats. I have heard a lot of tall riders (I am 6'4") have issues with seats, so I hope I am done now.

That is a 1984 Virago 1000. My wife took the motorcycle course at the local college last fall, so we found that for her to start out on. Great weight and balance given that it is a 1000cc machine.

Hey Cory, glad to see another Canadian here. Welcome from the west coast of BC. Don't stop when you get to lomax's place. Keep heading west and drop in here. Have you had time to consider going to Custer?
I'd be interested in knowing more about doing the H.D. fairing and the templates for the mounting brackets. lomax where did you get your brackets for the fairing?
I had a Virago,.... it was the last yr. before they went to the 1100. '84 ??? The balance was fantastic and you're right a good bike to learn on.

Welcome from central Florida. I have the Russell Day Long on mine and love it. I also did the HD fairing as well as a HD Tour Pak.

Here is a PDF file with the instructions I was sent from a friend of my father in law. They are fairly detailed and the process is fairly involved. This process is for mounting the inner and outer HD fairing. The process will be very different for just the outer. I also can get you templates for the brackets if you want to take a stab at it. First time I have ever tried something like this so it likely took me around 15 hours to get the raw brackets done and it all mounted up as you see in the pictures, including the extra brackets for the driving lights and two sets of the 'outer' brackets when I was not happy with the first set. You can also see a bunch more pictures of the process (not all of them are on there yet) at my site. This site is a work in progress but is a rather long winded list of the mods I have done and am working on, just scroll down to the fairing project on the list of mods. Happy to answer questions for anyone trying to do this mod, I had a lot of help from others to this point.

Cory,
Thanks for the links to the info.. I'll be book marking them and reading up. I had tried to get brackets but the fellow never seemed to be around. http://vulcanbrackets.com/ I'm not sure I'll get to doing this mod this year, at least not before Custer. But during the winter next year maybe. How is it to wire all the gauges? Do you need an aux. fuse box?
Thanks again

Thanks again
The vulcanbrackets.com guy makes good stuff I hear, but I have heard from a few people that they were lead on for a year or more with promises from him. I also tried to contact him a few times when the instructions seemed a bit overwhelming and never received any reply to my many requests for information. I hear he is very busy and does it in his spare time, so if you can make them yourself, likely will be faster. Also if you have any non stock parts (risers) the generic brackets can be a problem I have heard.

I am doing 4 gauges, but am waiting for all of them to arrive for the next few weeks. You can likely get away without the extra fuse box especially if you are just powering a few gauges, but I am going to run a 6 gauge wire on a 30A fuse from the battery to a fuse panel in the fairing to power everything (running lights, gauges, stereo, accessory plug, etc). I am only doing a tach, fuel gauge, clock, and voltmeter. All these are actually very easy to do from what I can see, the only trick is to either disable the factory fuel gauge (low fuel light still works) or put a switch in the line so one or the other gauges work but not both. I am not going to tackle the oil pressure at this point and many people that have done the water temp say they would not do it again because of leaks and other complications when they tap into the system, so I think I will leave that one alone.
