Horn Replacement
I know the majority of you will advise to go with an airhorn, but I want to get a plug and play electromagnetic mainly because I am too mechanically challenged to try to hookup a relay. The Stebel Electro or the Fiamm Freeway Blaster (low tone) are what I am I leaning towards for the replacement. I think either of these will be OK without a relay. Both claim to pull 5 amps. How much amperage will the stock horn wiring and horn button handle without having to wire in a relay?

Horn Replacement
I don't know anything about the horns you listed, but I was wanting a LOUDER horn, and something to cover the empty "V" on the left after removing the stock intake system. I got a Harley tourer horn off a "07 electraglide classic. I mounted it where the LH air cover was. It is VERY loud, at least to my ears 3-4 times as loud. The stock wiring was long enough to reach, so after modifing the bracket, it was a "plug-n-play" install. One little extra............. it looks GOOOOOOOOOOD!

If you find that the replacement horn starts to blow the fuse, I would advise you to find someone that can wire it up with a relay using larger wire and a larger fuse. You can use the existing horn circuit to operate the relay.

Jarhead the relay wiring is a piece of cake and I usually bail out on wiring stuff. I did it in a couple hrs, real easy.

Thanks Bob. I knew from a little research that most riders opted for a relay after the pull reached 10amps. Just was not sure at what amperage the stock system on the 1600 Nomad might start to fail and I wanted to make sure the stock wiring and the horn button would hold up to continued use of a 5amp horn. If the horn fuse is 10amp then a 5amp horn should run full throttle for a long time. Just curious, what is the amperage of the stock horn?
Doc, I know everyone says the realy is a snap brother, but I will settle for a fix that is guaranteed Marine-proof. Thanks for the help. |

Relay wiring is not that difficult. Believe me I am about as inept in that area as anyone and it took me longer to figure out how and where to mount the horn than to hook up the relay and the wiring for the horn. Of course, I had my brother the mechanic on the cell the entire time, lol.

Got specs on this 5 amp horn? Seems pretty fishy to me....
I like the stocker anyway, as it sounds like a cow moose in heat.. That gets me into the big boys faster in Fall..

According to the wiring diagram in the service manual the stock horn is 4 amps.

What Bob said on the FIAMM Freeway Blaster. Thanks
The Stebel electromagnetic version is listed below. Not a lot of difference in decibels 130 vs 132. Not sure about the size of the two horns. But I think either should mount up OK on a Nomad. I have found a lot of postive info on the FIAMMS. The Stebel Magnum is an electro-magnetic horn that produces 132db at 410 to 500Hz. |

Going the relay route is easy as pie. I went a little overkill on my Nomad.
http://www.bulldogsbike.com/airhorns.htm I started with the Fiamm Freeway Blasters but was not satisfied with the total sound, so I added a Wolo Bad Boy (Strebel air horn style) to the mix. So now, I'm tooling with a set of Fiamm Freeway Blasters and a air horn. Let's just say it's freaking LOUD... Yes, a relay is needed but is not difficult to put in and there is a minor power drop when I blast the horns but it recovers pretty quickly. But the classic thing is the reactions that I get when I choose to wake up that drifting driver with the cell phone... Cannot be too loud when it comes to your horns... |

WOW I see horns have come a long way since I messed with them on BOATS.. Living in the boonies as I do I tend to yell first, then blow the dismal horn out of frustration.
I need to nail the factory manual to the computer table too...
