Will Cobra True Duals Drag?

The stock pipes on my 2001 1500FI drag occasionally (okay regularly ) when I push it hard on mountain twisties. The problem seems to be worse when going downhill into a sharp turn.

I am considering installing Cobra True Duals w/Billet Tips for improved sound and to remove the goat bladder, but I don't want to make the dragging problem any worse. My concern is that the diameter of the True Duals is slightly larger and they don't tapper like the stock mufflers.

Thanks for your help.

They will drag worse in the condition you described since you will loose the taper at the end. I've almost wore thru my V&H cans, and that's why when I put a set of stock HD mufflers on, I choose a set with the taper down ends and has a slash cut like the V&H did.

What size rear tire are you running? A taller tire will give you a little more clearance before you drag the pipes.

Currently running a Metzeler ME880 150/80 on the rear. I wonder if anyone else has tried a taller tire to address this issue.

Another thing, if you firm up the rear shocks, that'll also help keep the pipes up.

Try a 160/80 16, that may help. Not that much larger, but may be just enough to minimize the dragging. That being said, if you are dragging your stock pipes, the Cobras will drag more. May want to air up the shocks a few lbs as well.

Whatever you are doing, you are doing it right if you are worried about dragging pipes!!! Most I have ever dragged (I think...) is a little floorboard, and rarely.

Another thing to consider is something VulcanE touched on with firming up the rear shocks. Unless you have done shock work you are riding around on 13 year old shock / springs. If they are softer than they used to be which is likely, the harder you corner the easier it is for centrifugal force to compress the suspension.

I had Cobra True Duals on my Nomad and after I put a car tire on I had to be really careful coming out of driveways or I'd scrape the bottom of the billet tips. As careful as I was, one of them was nearly ground flat after a couple of years.

I definitely plan to firm up the shocks before my next trip and look into a 160/90 for the next tire replacement. Probably hold off on the True Duals until I see how the these tweaks improve the situation. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I know how you feel when you hear that drag sound. It kind of jolts you until you know where the sound came from. I am going to try pushing back from my dinner table a little more often to help with my problem.

I am running COBRA's, and never drag them in a curve..I have the shocks set pretty stiif because I haul a pretty heavy pack a lot of the time, and I weigh around 245 lbs all suited-up !
I have dragged the floor boards a few times...and the worst trouble I -continue to encounter- with the exhaust pipes is ..backing into a curb to park...sometimes I misjudge the distance to the curb and will grind the tips up on the curb..or allow the bike to roll back a bit on startup-with a bit of leaning toward the kickstand- then when I tip it up level I have the right muffler tip hung on the curb ! (Also found out its a bad idea to hop off a lawn over the curb...that brings the bike down hard on the mufflers !) .. but I'm only 67..been riding since 1965...given enough time I'm sure I'll catch on !
