Be nice to Tim. He's just come outa that snow cave prison he's been trapped in since last Fall, subsisting on salted halibut, and pickled herring. When you poke your head through the snow door, the first thing you don't want to hear is a rider without no helmet and a loud ass motorcycle pipes!
The New York legislation has run amuck while you was down TC. I think you have to turn in all you fire arms and register your cap guns and sling shots.

Probably a first. My Vision will end up with slightly louder pipes just so I don't have to hear the sewing machine sounding motor but they'll still be relatively quiet. Damn sure they'll be a sight quieter than the V&Hs on my Nomad. I kinda like being able to hear the stereo at 80 mph. :)

The entire article is loaded with mis-direction of the stats giving the appearance these deaths were caused only by the lack of helmets.
If seems to skip-over other possible causes of the increase: Helmets are 41% effective at preventing death in crashes. Would you own anything that only worked 41% of the time? 42% of those killed had blood alcohol levels of at least 0.08 (Drunk) Ummm... can anything save a drunk on two-wheels? There is a large number of newly licensed, and unlicensed riders in the stats. Ummm... Maybe make it more difficult to get a motorcycle license? Those unlicensed... just let them kill themselves. The article does not mention the "aging" of motorcycle riders -- clearly an important consideration in the number of deaths. The article does not blame the dramatic increase in the number of motorcycles owned in the U.S. over the last 15 years. The more bikes the more accidents. Seems elementary -- unless you are a person that thinks the government should control every function of their lives. For that person... it is best to leave that fact out of the equation. Personally, I will not ride a motorcycle without a helmet -- ever. Having had a fairly bad accident once... the helmet saved my butt. I was likely one of the 41% that was saved by it. Otherwise to each their own... just don't send your medical bills to the IRS for me to pay them.

I have been on the scene of quite a few motorcycle crashes. Based upon my real world experience, every collision involved signifigant damage to the helmet or head. You are obviously safer with a helmet than without. Fullface helmets are the most safe, but half helmets provide protection in some wrecks too. I wear a half helmet personally, knowing the risks.
The most common crash is a motorcycle into the side of a car (left turning car failing to yield to motorcycle usually...). A full face helmet provides the most protection if the rider strikes between the windshield and the rear window. I have seen fatal crashes because a rider in a half face helmet plants his face in the A pillar and has massive and fatal head trauma. I have seen riders destroy their fullface helmets and live (with broken bones). If you don't strike the higher portion of the vehicle, you might get thrown over the car and slide/scrape down the road. Again a fullface helmet provides your best chance of surviving (with appropriate mesh or leather gear to prevent too much "scraping"). I remember a particularly gruesome wreck where a car turned left in front of a bike and the rider was thrown over the car... face first into a curb... with a half helmet on. Not sure if a fullface helmet would have helped... but he died immediately with massive, massive head trauma. If you get thrown over the car and land on your back, that half helmet could save your life. |

+1 to Old Bear and Cactusjack
I wear a full face helmet jeans and boots. What others do or do not wear is purely their choice, it is not my place to hold their hand or guilt them to match me. Login or Register to Remove Ads |
