Road rash is to be avoided, that had to hurt. I wear Draggin Jeans at the very least, Kevlar lining is sewn into the more likely areas of damage. Most of the time I put on riding pants on top of them with the associated protection, too. I have no illusions that a bone or two might get broke if I go down. Avoiding the extra damage would be a plus.

I use a combination of fire hose pants which with double leggings and really tough fabric are incredibly abrasion resistant along with a set of Bohn Armor which are pads in a lycra under suit. I thought they would be too hot for summer but they seem to work pretty well. Not too hot and warm in the winter. Top it off with a mesh armor jacket cool enough for summer but you can add under layers for warmth. Finally, always wear leather boots with Vibram lug soles, leather gloves and a half or full modular helmet. Gone down before and the gear you wear is all you have once you are sliding.

That had to hurt really bad!
I made a mistake of going into a corner too fast, got over on the frame and the rear
tire lifted off the road. Lots of sliding, I rode the bike home with two broken ribs, but
I didn't have a scratch or a bruise on me.
Having the right gear for every kind of weather is really worth it.
Ride safe and stay healthy.

Great article.
going to make me think twice about just wearing jeans for my city riding.
perhaps I'll get back to wearing the Bohn armour to work
