Nail in rear tire

I am running a car tire on the rear of my Nomad, and managed to pick up a nail in the tire. Is it a good idea to repair it with a patch or should I just replace the tire?

Car tires are not that pricey so you might consider replacing it. If money is tight right now you could unmount the tire from the rim and have the hole patched from the inside with a plug and patch. I would not do it with a plug from the outside.

I'd take the tire off and have a radial patch put on the inside of the tire.
Plugs have worked for me many times but the racial patch will take the tire back to the safe side better then a plug.
Remember, the bike weighs much less then a car and the force put on a tire in a sharp turn is many, many times more then you will ever see on a bike and they are patched all the times!
Would you replace the tire on your car if it had a nail in it or fix it??

I'd go with the patch inside....

Ive used plugs as well with great success, but a radial patch is better yet. If the tire still has a good amount of life in it I'd patch it.

I had two mushroom type plugs in my last non-car tire.
The first one was put in not long after I got the tire.
It lasted over 8K miles and 2K miles on the second plug.
Tire finally wore out at 10K miles.

About 9 years ago I bought a brand new Metzler tire for the rear on my Nomad. Went 3 miles and it started going flat on me!
I pulled into a single owner tire dealer in Lilburn, Ga. and it had a nail... BIG NAIL in the sidewall!!
We took the tire off and he put a radial sidewall patch over the hole.. RADIAL SIDEWALL PATCH??? Yeah, I thought the same thing!! <G>
That tire lasted until the thread wore out!..

Now, every time I get a flat I make sure they patch it with a radial patch.

The rear Metzeler I've got on my ride now has two plugs in it, and I've ridden it for at least two years like that. Although, I will say that lately one of the plugs has developed a slow leak (getting it replaced today). From this point forward, though, I'll just plug 'em so that I can get the bike to a dealer and get a radial patch put on it.

With a car tire I'd just plug it. Have done so many times on my cars and never had a problem. I use the sticky "tar worm" type of plugs. Work great.

I would guess millions of folks have plugged tires without a problem. I picked up a nail yesterday in my Avon rear tire. I called my motorcycle tire man and he said, "I'd just plug it and replace the tire a little sooner than I normally would. I checked it today and it still had 42 lbs of air. I think I am good to go.
