Bullet dodging....

Called Bob last week to order the JOG and in our conversation he asked at what mileage it failed. I told him it hadn't failed yet. Bob said, "Don't be hasty, get the side cover off and check it. If it hasn't started eating into the teeth yet and they're not sharp sometimes you can just peen over the tabs on the clutch basket and keep running it". He said that he's seen the plastic gear go for 140,000 - 150,000 miles. Kinda took me by surprise that he didn't just take the order, but rather made this suggestion. I feel like this shows his character and that he's more willing to help out than make a quick buck. We actually had a rather lengthy conversation and given that it was possible he wouldn't make any money at all, was pretty cool of him.

I've got over 20,000 miles on mine now. I picked up a fresh side cover gasket and front cylinder exhaust crush gasket yesterday and I pulled the cover off this morning. That thing was ready to go any day. It's amazing and lucky that it hadn't stripped off the row of sharpened teeth I saw on the gear. It's definitely toast.

Going to call Bob this week and get the JOG ordered up along with his clutch washers.

Whew, that was a close one.

Great testimony to the man's character...

Glad to hear your bike is home and parked before trouble happened though.
