Off duty Phoenix cop

Sounds like someone's situational awareness was on standby.

An off-duty Phoenix police motorcycle officer is in extremely critical condition after colliding with the back of another vehicle while changing lanes on Interstate 10, authorities said.

The officer, who was in uniform, was traveling east on I-10 near 51st Avenue on his personal motorcycle to his off-duty job about 8:40 a.m. The officer changed into a lane behind a box truck, then attempted to change lanes again but did not realize that traffic had slowed dramatically, DPS spokesman Bart Graves said.

The officer hit his brakes and began to skid, causing him to lose control and collide with the vehicle in front of him, Graves said. The 12-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department, assigned to the Estrella Mountain Precinct, was thrown from his bike.

The officer was not wearing a helmet, according to Graves.

An ambulance crew that was stuck in traffic quickly attended to the officer, who suffered life-threatening injuries, and transported him to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.

The collision closed all eastbound lanes of I-10 west of 51st Avenue until around 11 a.m., Graves said.

I find it strange that a moto officer wasn't wearing a helmet. I pray that he survives without serious complications. He's got a hard road ahead of him probably for a long time.

That is very unfortunate. Hope he does OK.

Temporary lack of situational awareness is "well-put".

Again... no matter the skill, years of riding, or training... riding is dangerous. It is unfortunate the officer wasn't looking ahead to where he was going. Sounds like a simple process (to look to where you are going) when riding... but complacency can set-in on anyone, as it must have for him.

We lost a member here a couple years ago (2008) in a similar situation (I believe from what I read) where he changed lanes without knowing what was in the lane. A sad, sad result occurred similar to this situation.

Lesson here... always think that you're going to get hit, or hit something... don't get in a hurry, and look before proceeding. If you are in a hurry, take the car. At least you'll have a fighting chance if you get into a wreck.

Hope he survives to ride again.

Very bad situation. And I bet he tells riders they should be wearing their helmets. I certainly hope he recovers without any long term effects.

There's no helmet law here Gene, for riders over 18. The officer had a nice Harley. It didn't look that banged up on the news.
