NC Ride in March
No laughing from you northerners. I was thinking of riding up to see my daughter the weekend of March 13th [she lives outside of Chapel Hill]. My view of riding months is corrupted since we have twelve of them in central Florida.
I'm not so concerned about temperature as I am about snow and ice. So is my thinking faulty or is this doable? Jim Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Doesn't your GW have heated grips, seat and places for heated gear? The roads shouldn't be an issue.

Ron,
The GW pretty much has climate control, but I failed to get the 4WD option with the snow plow attachment. :( |

The major thing about my cold riding in NC is my hands. I have got that under control with a set of snug gloves inside of goose down mittens, and also use hippo hands.....By March, unless there is an anomaly, weather wise, you may well find it quite balmy once the sun gets up...
If you are coming north on I 77, let me know, as I am 20 miles west of Charlotte and could shoot over and we could ride together going your way for a few miles...

Weather wise you will fine like bob said unless something weird happens....see storm of the century 3/13/93...but it could just as easily be in the 60's.
I think the odds are in your favor for the ride. I ride here quite a bit in March. Let me know..I am only 30-45 mins from Chapel Hill and would love to meet up with you. By the way bokobob...I am through Charlotte/Gastonia on my way to Kings Mtn and Shelby all the time...usually going down early in the morning and coming back mid-day/early afternoon.....we need to see if we can grab lunch sometime.

Jim, I am guessing you'll do I-95 to I-40 right? Thats 600 plus miles for you that day. Certainly do able, especially on the wing but it will be a long day. The later it gets the further north you are. North equals colder and North equals sun going down sooner and sun going down equals colder also! I suspect the last 2-3 hours of your trip if you do it in one day could be less than pleasant that time of year?
I lived just east of Raliegh for a couple years and by the end of March we rode quite regularly but we also had the occassional ice storm in March too! Weather changes a lot durring March in NC so if you can push back to end of month, might be something to consider? I go to Charlotte every month to check on house and visit friends which is about 380 miles from Jax. Chapel Hill is about 490. I cut off a I-26 in SC after about 230 miles on I-95. As it get's closer to your trip let me know your dates. If the weathers decent maybe we can do part of the up and back together? You are with in a mile of our Florida place as you go through Jax area so it would be catch each other. For that matter you are welcome to go via Charlotte if you have the extra time? I would not try to do that route in one day but you could lay over at my place there.

I'll keep you all posted - right now it looks like the weekend of March 13th is the front runner. Thanks for all of the invitations and welcomes.
Have a great weekend [hope the snow stops soon for y'all]. Did you catch my southern drawl there? |

I'm in south Charlotte. Sounds like we need a group meet in the area. The weather should be fine, but lokk at the 10 day outlook before starting. We had some snow and ice last year in March. But there won't be any this year.
