Turkey trivia
Wild turkeys are amazing birds. We have a lot of them here in Eastern Idaho and one local farmer shared this story with me. They had a hen and a brood of young living just inside the woods at the edge of a field near their house. They enjoyed watching the hen and chicks make their way along the edge of the field every day. One day a hawk swooped down and grabbed a chick and took off with it. The Momma hen turned on the afterburner and took off after the hawk in a straight line climbing until she caught the hawk and attacked it until it dropped the chick! No turkey dinner for that hawk.
Someone told me that wild turkeys are extremely powerful fliers and I have seen them zipping through the woods with no problem but until I heard this story I did not realize just how strong they are.

No way a turkey can catch a hawk if the hawk's in attack mode and the turkey's on the ground, not even in flight, unless the turkey it's carrying is too heavy for it .

Turkey trivia
Not long ago the Outdoor channel had a wild turkey on video tape chasing a red tail hawk away from her young. When the hawk took flight the turkey caught it before it reached hyper speed and knocked it down. The hawk did get away, but he didn't want any more turkey.

Turkey trivia
If you think about it it does make sense. Turkeys have huge wings and the muscles that power those wings are in the breast that we enjoy so much at Thanksgiving. Domestic turkeys have been bred to produce huge breast muscles and are so outsized and heavy that they can't fly, at least not like their "sleeker" cousins the wild birds. I've flushed turkeys in the woods and had them shoot out through the trees at light speed like quail. They are not cumbersome birds in the air. Just extremely big and extremely fast.

I've seen them fly. They think nothing of breaking branches when you flush them.

I have seen them fly off with an arrow sticking out both sides.
the arrow hanging up on trees doesn't slow them down at all |
