grinding/rubbing noise from front wheel

I was pushing my 1600 Nomad to move it in the garage and heard a grinding or rubbing noise coming from the front wheel. I suspect it is the brake pads rubbing against the rotor, but am not sure. Anyone else noticed this on their bike? Any thoughts? If it is the brake pads, do I need to take any corrective action? BTW, I have an 2007 Nomad with 5k miles on it.
