Tire Wear...
Got a ?? on tire wear. Here we have a Mich II. IF properly inflated should the wear on the tire be seen in the RED zone OR the BLUE zone. This came up with one of my co workers. I say the blue zone as it has the larger patch to ride on. SO I came here to the expert corner......

If you do any turning at all and ride the bike, the blue, If you putt around (straight line riding), take it very easy....red.
Remember, you gotta lean to turn....unless your on a trike....

The red zone will wear smooth first.
The bike spends most of its time going relatively straight.

I would agree with you on the blue zone. That red zone is pretty skinny, you'd have to ride a straight line for the life of the tire to only show wear there.

On a dual compound tire, the red zone has harder (better wearing but less sticky) rubber while the rest of the tire (blue zone and beyond) has softer rubber (worse wearing but more sticky). That's because, as others have said, you spend more of your time riding in a straight line where traction isn't quite as important. You don't need the stickiness. The softer rubber on the edges gives you stickiness in the curves.

Depends on the air pressure in the tire.

I agree that typically the red zone, the center of the tread, will ware faster than the blue zone. We spend most of our riding in the center of the tire. Although corning is fun and exhilarating, when you think about it, the average rider will spend most of their time rolling straight down the road. Sadly, riding the tail of the dragon, is not an everyday way of life...

Yeah I do indeed go straight most of the time. My commander II is wearing in the red zone. Lately it has picked up a roaring sound. (If ya know what I mean). I run about 38-40 in the rear. Just might be the way that the MC IIs sound after 8k miles.

Every tire I've ever had wore in the red zone. I love the twisties and got a good lean going on, so much that I dragged the floorboards on my Rocket 3, Harley Electra Glide and now my Nomad. But probably 90 percent of all our riding is straight up.
