Another BD debaffle done
Well today the temp’s and humidity dropped off so it became debaffle/silencer day. Went to Home Depot and bought the Rigid brand hole saw and all the other stuff needed. I had the wooden dowel but decided to try doing the mod without it and it worked out fine. I used a Milwaukee half inch hole shooter. Lots of torque and slow rpms. The saw popped through the first pipe in a couple minutes but the baffle wouldn’t budge, twist or move at all. I was pulling so hard on the baffle, it was mutilating it. I was worried it wouldn’t come out but decided to have my son sit on the bike and support it while I used 2 needle-nosed vice grips, planted my foot firmly on the back tire and pulled with all I had and it finally came screaming out. The 2nd pipe was completely different. I drilled through and was trying not to drill too far but the saw popped through and the baffle pushed in about an inch or so. Panic time, so I grabbed the vice grips again and the baffle was finger loose and slid right out. I think pushing it in a little must’ve loosened it up?
The sound? Man what a great mod! There are hole saw mods on tons of bikes and many of them sound terrible. The pipes sound great. Maybe a tad louder, hard to tell but the deeper tone you get makes this mod so great! Just love driving and hearing it now. If you are on the fence on this mod as I was, go for it, I can’t see how anyone would be disappointed with the outcome. Here are a couple finished pics: http://picasaweb.google.com/Onmylastnerve/Debaffle

Good deal!! I finally got the nerve up and did mine last weekend also. What took me the longest was after drilling and pulling out the silencers I wanted to clean up my cut and boy, it took a long time to grind that down so it looked nicer. Like you said, it sounds good now!!!

Nothing like another satisfied customer!!!
Try to clean up the opening real good and paint it so it looks "factory" I actually had the police enforcing sound at the beach at a check point and they thought it was stock. Actually commented that he wishes so many loud pipes would be quiet like mine was!! I doubt the sound or visual police will ever know the difference!!

As for the mufflers, you can get used ones cheap. Lots of folks take the stock ones off & toss them. That's what I did. I tossed them in the rafters. Maybe some day I'll sell them cheap. |

I can't see how you could mess it up. Even if you managed to and didn't like it you could always weld them back in.

Hey nomad, I felt the same way and kept watching everyone else do it and everyone liked it so I finally took my time and did it too. I bought a little grinding wheel afterwards and cleaned up the holes and painted it black and it looks like it came that way. Thanks to all who have done it and talked about it, shown pictures, etc.... it all helps to give a guy the shove he needs sometimes. Coldfingers
