Rear Differential/Gear Oil Leak
So I had the rear final drive/gear oil changed out as part of a free service the dealer gave me (4 free services @ 600, 4000, 8000, 12000 miles) this was the 8,000 @ about 8,500 miles. Well I do the changes a couple times in between but they did the last one and i got the bike home the next morning i had a oil spot about the size of a quarter below the rear casing. i wiped it down, checked that the bolt was tight and no more spots on the floor but i have been able to swipe my finger across where the 2 "metal pieces meet" if that helps, no oil around drain bolt or fill cap just where the two separate "pieces" meet. do you think they filled it too much and if so the gaskets gone? or is this just residual...its been about 100 miles of riding since the change. should i just drain it and fill it the way i do and most others have suggested... I have changed it before but they way mac says on a 2x4. thanks

Rear Differential/Gear Oil Leak
Take the filler plug out and see if any oil runs out, then put it back in. Wipe everything down and see if its stopped leaking.
If its leaking youll have to take it back to them.

Rear Differential/Gear Oil Leak
You're assuming the dealer technician did it right. Make sure it isn't overfilled before you go knock heads. Just as Ringadingh suggested, open the fill plug, see if any runs out. Do this on the sidestand or better yet, put the sidestand on a 2x4 laid flat and see if any runs out.

Rear Differential/Gear Oil Leak
That is the reason I have done all my changes since day one. I know how much I put in. Thanks to this forum Mac and some of the others saved me. The book says to change the rear drive oil with the bike level. Doing that and you will overfill the bike. Always lay a 2 X 4 down and do it that way. I would put it on the 2 X 4 and open the drain bolt. Let the extra amount drain out and the wipe everything down really good and then keep an eye out for any further leaks. It may have just been some oil that got spilled. Hopefully your gaskets will be fine.

Rear Differential/Gear Oil Leak
Uh oh.
I am not clear on where you see the oil. Are you saying near the black rubber boot at the top of the drive shaft tube?

Rear Differential/Gear Oil Leak
mac; it sounds like the spot where the final drive bolts to the swingarm with the 4 acorn nuts.

Now maybe if these 4 nuts are all each loose well then maybe, but there will be other damage if this is true. That shaft housing must be locked up good and tight right there. If not and the final drive is twisting right there, theya' is going to be hell to pay. (4) 10mm studs there is heavy hardware in a high torque place! It must be there and tight.

Rear Differential/Gear Oil Leak
sorry for the delay...i couldn't find the name in my service manual but basically as best as i can tell its the first seem where two of the black metal pieces meet where the drain bolt is. i can wipe my finger across it and have some oil...very little at this point on my finger? doesn't seem to be overfilled.

Rear Differential/Gear Oil Leak
Jay check the acorns nuts there. Better pull them one at a time and anti seize the stud treads and retighten each one, one by one. But first see if you can tighten any BEFORE you take them off.
This is an unusual leak. Most normal leaks run oil all the way up the driveshaft to the very top and spill out gear oil at the large rubber boot. The area you have leaking won't leak even then! My concern is that one, or more acorns are loose.

Rear Differential/Gear Oil Leak
I don't think enough oil has leaked yet to drip out the front of the driveshaft, If the level is ok it may stop at this point on its own.
I know exactly what you mean though , mac.
