I have always rode import bikes. I preached to my son about the reliability of imports. I helped him buy an import (Honda). He owed only $600 on his Honda and it was in pristine shape with only 10K on it. The Harley bug bit him. He traded his Honda for a Harley that was four years older and had 4K more miles on it and ended up in debt about $3500.00. He never had any problems with the Honda but the Harley has been in the repair shop twice in the last eight months and it is currently leaking oil all over my garage floor. With a Harley you pay for an image not quality.

Flew from Tucson to Denver and picked up our 2010 Voyager, then drove it home (1000 miles). A guy I work with who is a big Harley guy and lives in Denver told me if it was a Harley he'd have let me store it as his house and ship it to Tucson instead of having set aside several days and ride it home. It told him if it was Harley I'd have had to ship it, it'd never have made the trip non stop!

Most riders will return a wave, but when they don't it's usually a Harley rider. I just don't understand the snub. To quote the late Rodney King "can't we all just get along?" Aren't we all out there because we enjoy the ride?

I had the bug to get one of the new indians. After testing them out I saw they are great motorcycles. The new Harleys look really nice too with the high out put 103 motors. But after watching the new comparison of the new Indian Chieftain and the HO Street Glide I realize they just dont have enough to get me to give up my Kawasaki.

I have a 2003 Z1000 with 142,000 miles on it (no, not a typo), I pick up my Vaquero on the 24th. I have ridden it hard from the day I bought it brand new (well, after the break in), and it looks like it. It is beat up on all sides. The only failure I have ever had that was not accident related was when the rear sprocket carrier grenaded. When ever I get mouth from some weekend warrior on a perfectly clean, every option available HD, the first question I have for them is "how many miles you have on that thing?" After that I usually ask them if they want to race...straight line, twisties, even long distance. "Pick somewhere in the US and I'll see you there". Why would I want to spend that kind of money on a 70 year old motor, when I can spend half of it and have a better performing bike that I can ride constantly and not have to take to the shop for work every few months.
I ride with a lot of people that ride a lot of different bike, many of them Harley, and the real riders never talk down to someone because of the brand of bike. In my circle, you will catch waaay more flak if you leave the scoot at home on a chilly or wet day. Just my $.02 |

I get the flack all the time too about not owning a real motorcycle. Almost everyone I work with that has a bike has a Harley. A lot of them come to my shop for some one off items but I have a policy..no dickheads allowed..hence many don't get custom work done from me! I don't care what kind of bike one has..just ride it.

I haven't actually gotten any flack from anybody about my Nomad yet. Last long rode I was on we had two Harley's, an FJR, an Aprilla, and myself. The road king suffered an electrical problem 1/3 of the way in and had to get a roadside repair. No big, just stuff vibrating loose. Go figure. I figure my bike is just as comfortable and even more reliable with a much lower price tag than the HD. Although, the late model Street glide my buddy was on was pretty sweet. If I had that kind of disposable income, I would buy one, but I don't and the Nomad suits me just fine.

Ummm... I always hear people make this comment, but have never seen Harley's littering the road-side broken-down. Not sure where you are riding to see that happen... or is that image merely in the minds of some... Just saying...

It's a stereotype based on the experiences of owning AMF harleys, I bet. The jokes go around on a lot of bike, like if a triumph isn't leaking oil, check it because it's probably out of oil, etc. Harley's made today are as reliable as any bike given proper maintenance like any other bike.

A real motorcycle?
I'll never forget while attending the first VBA (then KawaNOW) National rally in Custer, SD back in 2009. Four of us...although I can't remember who all was with me at the time (old-timers disease), were riding into Custer State Park. We all stopped at the ticket window and shut off the bikes. This cute little twenty-something gal sticks her head out of the booth, surveys all the bikes, then spits out this little gem...
"Wow...those are really nice looking bikes...and they're not even Harley's!"....
