Week of adventure (on my Nomad) ends adventurously

On my trip back from TN to visit with davidjones, I stretched my range out to the max, or as close as I want to go riding two up. I hit the reserve ('99 carbed) at about 115 or so, then proceeded to ride down I-75 further and further. When I finally stopped, as you can see by the attached picture, I almost fully filled the 4.2 gallon tank. My wife told me that she would have been stuck at the bike while I walked.

I always reset my trip meter at fill-up. That way I can compare fuel millage in two ways. I get 30-31 mpg. Not great. I don't know why. I have read somewhere that about right, 30-34 mpg. Anyway it's better than my ford super duty v-10 6.8 litre at 11 mpg combined. I went 16 miles with the low fuel light on. It stalled on me going up the steep road 1/2 mile from my house. I pulled over leaned the bike back and forth and made it to my house and then another 2 miles to the gas station. I've never put more than 4.8 gallons in it.
