Larry; I went up to check the lake and it isn't safe enough for trucks yet where I wanted to go. The ice road was good, so we drove over to the island about two miles offshore, on 16" of good ice. Its an Indian reservation so I grabbed a pack of cheaper cigars. The condition will probably worsen here before they improve since its mild and rain for a few days.

Your first drive on ice must be a little nerve rackin but after a little bit I would think that you don't even think of it.

There on the ice road it doesn't bother me at all, its well maintained and had a few trucks crossing at any one time. The Indians maintain it and it is well marked and very wide. Im not sure how this warm spell will effect it though.
On the other part of the lake I am a little nervous the first couple times of the season. Once the ice gets a couple feet thick its not a worry unless you hit a large pressure crack.
They say the ice didn't freeze consistant this year, if you cut a 4 ft hole with a chainsaw, it can be 12" at one end, and 6" at the other. Thats why we are waiting. Snowmobiles and ATV's have been out so far with no problems.

How are you supposed to go ice fishing then? Do you have a long pole with a real heavy sinker to break the ice ? :-/

A few years ago I had to drive to Chicago by way of the U. P. and was amazed at the village that they built on the ice in Green Bay Wisconsin. I gave up Ice fishing many years we drank to much beer drilling the holes.

There are over 4000 huts placed on Lake Simcoe every winter, and it also looks like small towns out there. I sold my hut a few years ago, and now fish out on the open ice, thats why I like to have the truck to move around the lake on.
