Mine doesn't ping 99% of the time. It is only on the hottest of days that I hear pinging and I run 85 octane here. We do have the benefit of altitude for that. I carry a small bottle of octane boost for those ocassions.
As far as changing octane, try the midgrade and if that still pings then move to the next higher octane. Run as low of octane as possible without pinging. If you run too high of octane, you will have carbon build up in the cylinders. Do not run avgas. That stuff is really high octane and meant for high compression engines.

Octane Boost?
