2008 1600 wont stay running

Hi Guys.. been a few years since I've been active on here. a wedding, 2 moves and a pile of honey do lists checked off and hopefully I'm back here for awhile! My 1600 batt was shot at the end of last season. i was able to jump it using a portable battery pack. I ran it to my storage unit where she sat over the winter. just went to start it (jump it) to get it back home to replace the battery and it starts and idles just fine, but as soon as I disconnect the portable battery pack the bike dies immediately. I know the batt is toast, new one should be here tomorrow. do these bikes produce enough juice at idle to run without the battery? could my dead batt be draining juice faster than it can be made? I'm just hoping I don't have a bigger problem somewhere..

thanks

tony
