I need advice again
My friend/boss is contemplating buying his first bike. I found an 02 Yamaha 1100 cruiser with a windshield for $4000. It has 1300 miles on it and had it's first service done. It's been sitting for 3 years. We need to go look at it. I'm wondering if we just throw a set of jumper cables on it and start it or what? We know there's no lubrication in the cylinders. What do you do in a situation like this? Start it? Change the oil first? What? :-/

I'd change the oil first. If you jump it, know what your doing so you don't blow out some electrical componant. pull the spark plug wires and spin the engine 10 seconds then wait a minute, then 10 more seconds. Do this several times to pump the fresh oil up to the top end.
Then put the spark plug wires back on and start the bike.

Come on, do I LOOK like a fitness freak? I just figured that by manually rotating the crank and drivetrain, the oil will get circulated a little bit before they try to start it. I think fuel is going to be a problem though.

My son had the 650 version. Based on his experience over winter, the clutch plate may be locked up and need a good bit of force to break it free. Be careful about jumping it from a car battery. From a bike is OK, but with a car, don't run the car engine. However, 1100's have a good old fashion carburetor, so you can push start them fairly easily and then let the bike recharge the battery.

If you try the "tow it up to 70 mph and drop the clutch" method, please have some one following with two items. One, an ambulance, and two, a video camera shooting the whole scene. The video might make it onto the Tonight show with Jay Leno! :) :) :) :)

I bought a bike that had been sitting for about the same time. I would do what BD says. You can probably hear it run and shift thru the gears. But figure you will have to at least clean the carb and fuel jets before it will run right.
The bike I bought was a 4 cyl honda. Cleaning thoses 4 carbs was a two 12 pack job. |
