I shouldn't be allowed near wrenches .....
Simple oil change right? So simple a caveman could do it! Sometime I amaze myself ::). I changed the oil using the drain with the screen, removed it, no problem. Drained the oil, replaced everything, no problem (so I thought). New Shell Rotella T6 synthetic 5w-40 and Bosch 3300 filter, fired it up toped it off, all good. Cleaned and put everything away. Came in the house had supper. Then I sat down with my computer and gadgets fix-it page was still up from when I checked to see where the drain plug was located. That's when I noticed I had put the screen back in backwards
![]() Went back outdoors got the pan for draining the oil cleaned it up so it looked new again (no way was I wasting 3+ quarts of oil at $6+). Removed the drain plug again (stopped to congratulate myself), swapped the screen end for end, after I straightened it out. In case you're wondering the big end go's in first :). It's a good thing they're soft. It's all back together ....... again. On the plus side, tomorrow will be in the mid 60's so I'll go for my first ride this year ![]() Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Hey we've all been there. And you won't forget next time.
All I will say is it likely wouldn't have hurt anything. After my initial break in period of the first oil change on my bike where I removed the screen and had some gasket debris, I never found anything in it after that EVER in all the years, so I wouldn't sweat it. You did do it the way intended so that's ok, but no need to panic. Still always something to remember when in doubt read instructions again and again and print them off maybe. Now you will have the sense of accomplishment in doing it yourself.

I thought about leaving it, but decided I didn't want to take the chance on toasting the motor for 15-20 minutes worth of work. The screen was a little crushed and shaped like an "S" but otherwise ok. I'm glad I did take it out as it apparently had never been done. The bike has 30000 miles on it.

Just so you or anyone else knows, if this happens again, you can lay the bike over on the right side engine guards. This will not hurt the bike and you can then remove the drain plug with the screen without losing any oil at all.
![]() Don't ask how I found this out ::)

Good thing you took it out and put it back in correctly. You wouldn't have had oil flow with it in backwards.
Congratulations on accomplishing the mission.
