Confession Time!

Okay, now that I have tried to learn from my friend's accident, I will confess my own close call!!!

Honestly, we had been doing twisties, switchbacks, and hairpin turns for several days and I was getting tired. It takes alot of concentration to do those over and over again!

We were coming into a curve and I realized I was going faster than I felt comfortable with. Instead of letting myself swing out too wide and fearing not having control, I instead went too far to the inside...and headed into the other lane!!!! I was also video taping, believe it or not!!! Chaz had asked me to mount my camera and get some video of the roads were riding. So, you can see that I came WAY TOO CLOSE to going head on into a Jeep!!!

It happens around :37....also, I had the camera on my left handlebar so other times it may look like I am going over the line, but I'm not. Oh, and that's Chaz in front of me!
(If you watch the whole video you'll see the kind of riding we did in WV for 4 days!)

Great footage. But I wish you hadn't crossed that line. Stay safe

OK, 3 Hail Marys and don't be too aggressive in those unfamiliar curves. Be careful.

More curves there that all of Nebraska. Glade for you that the Jeep was not hugging the yellow line.

There's allot to be said for being rested. I'm always testing and self evaluating myself when riding or even driving a car. As soon as my riding/driving isn't sharp I start wondering why.

Just lazy/relaxed, lack of concentration, tired/unable to concentrate or maybe I just miss-judged a situation and everthing is fine. If it continues I start backing off.

I should stop but I never do. I do slow down considerably though.

Cheri,

I think most of us have had a close call one way or another. The big thing is you made it thru that and hopefully have learned from it.

Some great footage CheriAnn. You were hugging the inside of the curve which is what I always do. The bike will move pretty rapidly back to the outside. You just went a tad far and crossed the line. Glad everything turned out good for you.

That Jeep is an example why I try to stay to right on curves. If you are both hugging the line, you will lose.

Cheriann,

I realize that what is a "close call" for you may not be the same for another person. I personally didn't see this as a big deal. I thought you got to close to the line but you corrected immediately. You took action in a possibly bad situation as opposed to many people that don't do a thing and pay the price. I look at your video as a great learning tool. What to avoid in a sharp curve and how to take immediate corrective action.
From what I see I'd say great job.

vin

Made me pucker just watching!
Be careful. There are lots of great roads in WV. Beautiful country, I could learn to love it there.

Yup, me to, and I live here and ride these roads all the time. I had a logging truck cross over in my lane on a curvy section of hwy 50 in northern WV. Just one truck tire over the line but I thought I was a gonner.

As an old friend of mine used to say "You couldn't drive a straight pin up my a$$ with a jackhammer".

Well not for a few hours anyway

Just curious - did you feel pressured to stay up with the group? I have been on group rides and did not like the pace they were setting. The last one I went on a guy in front of me ran off the road into a ditch and broke his collar bone. I had already sensed the group was going too fast for me so I backed off and let them go. The guy that wrecked said he was trying to keep up and couldn't handle the curve.

I'm sure that was part of it. Honestly, I wasn't having trouble keeping up with the group, until after a few days of it. It really is exhausting doing those roads day after day, when you are not used to it at home. I should have slowed back when I realized I was getting tired.

We had a friend just go off the road this past weekend near Tail of the Dragon for that very reason! He was trying to keep up with the lead rider (who was much more experienced than the others following behind). Another friend there told me they forgot the wise saying, "Ride your own ride"
