Pinion Seal Leak (Update)

I just spoke to my dealership service manager. It indeed was the pinion seal leaking causing the gear oil drip at the drive shaft rubber boot. They will replace the seal and a $86 coupling? I'm not sure what coupling they are talking about but they are replacing it. He also insisted that they always fill the gearcase with the bike level. I will put it on the sidestand and drain some of the oil out when I get it back home next week. Both times I changed the gear oil, I had it on the sidestand resting on one 2x4.
I also spoke with Hopkins about my 46255 converter acting screwy after riding through torrential rainfall in Kansas and Oklahoma. The Hopkins tech told me that they have found very minute cracks in the molded casings of some of their converters allowing moisture to enter the converter. Rare, but it has happened. My luck is mine would be one of them. The converter worked fine by the time I left Lindale, TX. They are replacing the converter free of charge without having to show a receipt. I should be all squared away by next Friday. I know, my troubles are very minor compared to what 3 guys encountered. Ride safe everyone.
Mitch

Pinion Seal Leak (Update)

Mitch, that's good news. I'm sure the Hoppy was all dried out by the time you made it through Texas.

Pinion Seal Leak (Update)

Mitch, good to here its not too severe. Like I told you in Custer, I'm not getting any drips....but a do find evidence of a little gear oil residue on the bottom of the boot once in a while.........I am keeping a watch on it for now......no noticeable loss over the entire 4200+ mile trip from the final drive casing.

Pinion Seal Leak (Update)

Well, I picked up my bike this afternoon. Parts changed were:
Pinion seal Part #92049
O-Ring Part #92055
Coupling Part#42034
Swingarm gasket Part #11061
3.6 hours labor
All covered by the warranty. It would have been 2 weeks this coming Tuesday evening that my bike has been there. Pretty long for a 3.6 hour job. 3 days to get the parts. None were in stock. They filled the gearcase with the bike level. I'm going to leave the level where it is until my next oil change. If it starts leaking again, they will just have to fix it again.

Pinion Seal Leak (Update)

what did the drip look like? I just noticed some drips on the ground today . I had stopped for luch and parked where there was nothing on the spot. When I came out I saw a spot on the ground. It was about 1inch around. when I checked it, itwas oil. Needless to say ride was cut short and I got Home. Dealer will be called Monday. I am planning to make a long trip later this month. Am I over reacting or freaking out. The bike only has 9800 miles on it.

Was it gear oil or engine oil and where was the drip from?

Pinion Seal Leak (Update)

It was right under the motor about halfway. I assumed it was motor oil.

Look at it closely, if it appears to be dripping from the sidestand area, it's probably the clutch pushrod seal.

Mac, It was all covered by the warranty. I looked at a drawing and saw the coupling they are talking about. It is Part #42034 and is $78 on Bike Bandit's website. Cheap Cycle Parts has it for under $70. They also changed the O-Ring at the coupling. The invoice showed 3.6 hours of labor. Again, no charge to me, parts and labor covered by the warranty.
