Not Nomad (helping a friend)

I have a friend that has an old Yammi. An 81 xs850 Venturer. The old fairing style. His windshield was busted by a rock and I am trying to help him find a replacement. No dealers carry stuff that old anymore of course. I have searched ebay and have been unsuccessful. Any of you guys have an idea where I might look next.

It is an amazingly good running machine and he will not part with it. It is his primary transportation so I am trying my best but I am hitting a wall.

I went to Lowes and made my own windshield for a C-50 I had. Get some plexyglass and cut it to size. Use a torch and fether the edges to soften up the cut areas. also used tiedown straps to bend it and used a heating pad set on high to help softenit up so it will bend to that position.

Try the old bike barn. I found 6 different windsheilds for the 81 Yamaha XS850 on their site.

I have bought lexan off of ebay and made several windshields. You most likely can use the 1/8" stuff for a fairing windshield.

I think that is what we are going to have to do. I haven't been able to find one for the fairing at any price anywhere.

Reminds me of my first bike, a 79 XS400. It had a Vetter fairing but no bags or trunk, or back rest, and it was a dark bugandy.

Had the same rims as above.

OP - Even it you have found a used on, it is probably pretty beat up. Because it is a "Vetter" style fairing a windshield should be very easy to make. Either 1/8 Plexiglas or Lexan (preferred). Lay the old shield on top and mark out the shape and mount holes. Cut on a band saw with a fine blade. Drill holes using a new, very sharp bit. Sand the edges of the new shield with sand paper starting at 100 grit, going up through 220. Do it by hand, keep your fingers and the sand paper off the flat surfaces of the shield. Pull the paper and mount. Ta Da...new shield for just a few bucks.

If you are looking for a band saw, ask around the hood. At least one geezer has one stuck away in a corner. I know I do.
