oil leak.....

my 2003 seems to have developed an oil leak at the base
of the jug where it fits to the crankcase. if i look under the left breather cover i can see where it is seeping under the left engine cover, where it drips to the ground. its not big, but it does leave 2 or 3
drops on the floor. is this common? what can i do to fix it? retorque
the jug? needless to say, i hate oil leaks! ???

...Nomad
Are you sure the leak is at the base of the jug? On the front jug, the cam chain tensioner gasket, on the left rear, could be leaking. Higher up yet is the camshaft seal which is a common source of oil leak. Might be worth closer inspection. If the gasket for the jug to crankcase is leaking, re torqueing might help but most of the bolts are under the valve cover and a lot of work to get at. If memory serves, there are 4 nuts, 1 each at the front and rear lower of each cylinder. These are not so easy to put a wrench on either. Good luck with it! :)

o.k., if it is the cam chain tensioner...just put in a new gasket? retorque? i will try the lucas. how does it work? thicker? sorry for all the questions. to be honest i never took the left breather off to see where it was. it could very well be higher up on the jug like you say.
i'll go check it out.

no k&n filter. the leak seems to be coming from between the cylinders.
i see it weeping from under the left air cover. it could be coming from the front cam chain tensioner...i don't know.

Take out the left side front cylinder spark plug. look into the hole and you will see a small hole at the bottom just out side where the spark plug screws in... now is there any oil there? If there is, you will need to change the inner O-ring on the spark plug tube. That little hole is a weep hole to let water escape, and it ends up going out a hole just above the cam chain tensioner. These things are easy to change out, and most shops have them in stock. I would change both inner and outer O-rings on both the front and rear spark plug tubes while you are at it. Parts will be about $15, I know because I just did mine.
