Difficulty Getting the Oil Filter Off Nomad 1700
Just did my third oil change on my 2010 Nomad 1700 last night. The first time I changed the oil at 6300 miles (bought it used) I could not get the oil filter off, so I just left it. The second time I had to destroy it to get it off. I thought the dealer must have just put it on too tight. Last night I could not get it to turn using any of the cap wrenches that I have. I have a couple that were a good tight fit on the new filter, but when I tried them on the old filter (both are Kawasaki brand) I could not turn the filter. I guess I will go to a filter with a nut on it, but for now, any tips on removing the filter?
I went ahead and added the new oil because I needed to ride the bike to work today. thanks Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Skip the filters with a nut on the end. You will twist every fourth one off at the base of the nut.
You can find this filter wrench in most good auto parts stores, or here on ebay http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/Sealey-Oi...-/141642805710 It will very rarely let you down. I have only once in 40+ years had to sandwich a piece of sandpaper tween the strap and very oily dirty overtight filter. End of filter cap wrenches are NOT a mechanics best friend. Too much chance of clearance issues tween the wrench and filter body. Skip the plastic band filter wrenches. The strap will eventually crack or slip and leave you with bruised knuckles. Check the mating surface for any defects, lubricate both o-ring or gasket and base with new oil and thread on until contacts then ONLY 1/2 extra turn.

I've never had much luck using the cap wrenches with a tight filter, I've had better luck with the strap or band type.
The previous person or you maybe? (No picking, just asking :-) ) might not have used any oil on the gasket then it sticks like no ones business. Or maybe over-tightened it possibly. Mike

I've had to drive a screwdriver thru a tight filter to get it off. Makes a mess.

Those strap wrenches have never worked for me. Guess I don't know how to use em. All I ever do is crush the can. I'm not sure on a newer nomad but on my nomad I have enough room to get a small pipe wrench around the filter. If you have the same clearance then use a small pipe wrench . You will never have a problem again with not being able to get them off.

The filter should let go before the filter would crush. A lot of bikes don't have enough room to get a pipe wrench on the filter. |

I use one like this. Had it for 9 years, works every time.
https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/flotool.../6000162308902 Used it on the Nomad, then the Voyager and now the V Star. |

When you install the new filter only put it on hand tight, not too much either. I can get most of my filters off by hand at the next filter change without using a wrench.

I got this, Lisle - Filter Wrench Part #: 63250 from Orielly auto parts. It was recommended on this site. has worked well for me. But I still use the nut on the end filters. Hiflo HF 303 RC. the RC has the nut on the end. Tighten by hand like you would a car and the nut works, use a wrench to tighten and Blame the NUT that tightened it.

I like the way this looks. It appears it is adjustable. What type of mechanism closes the jaws in?

An oil filter should only be installed hand tight. Tighten to where it's snug, then 1/2 turn more. If done right, you shouldn't need a wrench to remove it.

I agree you should lubricate the gasket and tighten 1/2 a turn after it makes contact. I've been doing it that way on all my vehicles for the past 50 years and never had a problem until I got a 2005 Tundra pickup. It has had 19 oil changes and every filter so far has over tightened by itself to the point that it will only come off with a strap wrench like the one in post # 2 and each time it deforms the filter in the process. I've tried 3 different brands of filters but all over tighten. Drives me up the wall.

It has a weak spring in it to close down on the filter. but it does not matter because it will close down as you turn it/tighten. Just the design of it. Works like a Plyers
