Thinking of going with a 1700 Voyager

Anything to look out for? I'm casually looking at 2009 & up - I think that's when the "new" faring cam out.

Are these a single pin crank? The reason I ask is I have Vance & Hines on my 1500 Nomad and really like the sound.

I will be looking at used bikes with miles on them (Hopefully 20k or less) so what should I be looking for?

When did ABS come out? Do you like the ABS? These are all EFI, Correct?

What options are available that these may come with? Is the stock seat decent?

I've had the honor of owning 3 Voyagers - 2009 Non ABS, 2012 w / ABS, 2014 w/ABS.
Get the ABS -

Also, see if you can find one that has the KAMS (Kawasaki Air Management System) that helps with the hot air that is created by the 1700 engine. The KAMS system has a rear fan to pull heat off from the rear header as well as ducting to force air down and away from the rider.

Very little changes in the bike from 2009 to current. The KAMS was the big difference over the years and somewhere around 2010/11 they made some transmission changes that made the bike shift a little quieter.

Many Voyagers with Miles on them will have a front end wobble, New tapered head bearings will take most if not all out of it.

As compared to your 1500 - Well the 1700 is a total different animal, it is not a redesign of the 1500. What I found when I went from a 1600 to the 1700 is I rather enjoyed listening to the radio more than I liked listening to the pipes. If you want more power, there is an ECU upgrade that wakes up the 1700 - this is instead of a Power Commander.

Yes the 1700 is EFI - as well as Throttle by Wire - But it has cables to give you the feel of your older bikes. -

Seats - Actually - the Stock Voyager seat was the first Kawasaki I could ride with the stock seat - my 900 Classic and 1600 Nomad needed a Mustang seat so I could ride them. I put many miles on the stock seat before I upgraded to a Russell DayLong seat. I keep buying new Voyagers so my Daylong will fit on them.

Very few engine problems with the 1700, hopefully the one you find will have service records.

Bottom line is I really like mine - 17 months and 31,000 miles - not to mention it's RED and it's the fastest color.

Good luck on your search.

Thanks for the great info. Is the seating position similar to the nomad? I like the way it sits. Very good info on the radio.

Seating position for the rider is similar to a Nomad but your passenger is closer to you, not too much room if you are both on the large size.

Some 1700's have had the transmission output shaft bearing go bad requiring a complete tear down of the engine.

That is why I traded my 2012. I was ready to go on a trip and found the bad bearing and felt I would rather have a different Bike than a repaired bike for the big trip.

Luckily mine was under warranty and it got traded as if it were fixed.
