I've been sick

I have been debating whether or not to post about this.

Those of you who attended the rally in Orofino may have noticed I was favoring my right foot. Well, here's the "rest of the story" as Paul Harvey used to say. I had a callous split open on my right foot a couple of weeks before the rally, it was on the outside near the heel and I really couldn't see it. I pretty much ignored it and it became infected, I was in a lot of pain during the rally but being the trooper I am, I wasn't going to let it stand in the way of having a good time.

I had a doctor appointment scheduled for this past Monday, and I was going to have my doctor look at it but the day I came home from the rally (Tuesday before last), I asked my wife to look at it. She shoved me in the car and took me to the ER. This was 9:00 PM Tuesday evening. After a couple of hours in the ER and having xrays taken and blood drawn, I was admitted. I had surgery on my foot on Thursday to debride the wound and remove the dead tissue. A biopsy confirmed that the infection had gotten into one of my bones. I spent 5 days in the hospital receiving IV antibiotics and they sent me home last Sunday evening. Also, my kidney function was poor due to dehydration from riding in 100+ degree heat for several hundred miles. After a couple of days and gallons of IV fluids my kidneys were good again.

They inserted a TACC line in my chest and I have to receive antibiotics twice daily for the next 6 weeks. They showed my wife how to administer them. I went to the foot doctor today and the foot is healing, although I have a long way to go yet. As many of you know I am diabetic and especially susceptible to foot problems.

I took this week off from work and will start working from home next week. I'm fortunate that I have the kind of job that only requires a phone and an internet connection for me to work.

My bike is sitting in my garage just as it looked when I came home, it's filthy and covered with 3000 miles of rain, dirt and road grime. It may be awhile before I can get it cleaned up.

Well, that's my story. Drink plenty of fluids and take care of your feet.

I had the same thing happen with a bone infection when I broke my ankle.

Not sure what a TACC line is. For me they used a PICC line. Twice a day I had to hook a bottle of antibiotics to it for weeks. It went away and reappeared a year later. Back on to a PICC line and antibiotics again.

Also, I don't know if they told you but there is only one way to 100% guarantee an infection is gone.

If you haven't already, make sure you see a infectious disease specialist to make sure you knock it out.

It was great to finally meet you in Orofino but you should have taken care of yourself first!!!!!!!

Thanks Dave,

A TACC line is similar to a PICC line, but a PICC line is in your arm and a TACC line is in your chest. I am under the care of an infectious disease physician, a kidney specialist, a foot and ankle specialist and my regular physician.

This is the 4th time I have had cellulitis in that leg/foot in the past 18 years. The last time was 3 years ago and was what derailed my plans to attend the national in Maggie Valley.

Scott,
It isn’t always easy not feeling well…hope it helps to know others are thinking
of you and hoping that you’ll be better very soon. Take good care of yourself.

Have you ever wondered why you can always read a doctor’s bill and
you can never read his prescription?

Damn Scott, that is waaayyyyy too close! Take care of yourself, heal well. It's hard enough to heal without being diabetic at our more, uh, "experienced" years, so stick to the treatments until the wife releases you from care. Don't have to worry about what the doctors say, she is gonna make sure you are back to good health before you get to play again!

Oh, if you need someone to wash your baby and take her out for short runs (cross-country, what?) while you heal, I'm sure we can find volunteers here!

Scott when we all met in Crescent City you looked like a million dollars and you'd been taking care of yourself. Get yourself back in that shape and most of your issues will disappear. I've started my goal of exercising (walking 5 miles every evening) No starches and booze

I want to grow up to be Gene The Machine! Join me?

Glad your on the mend good buddy. I always look forward for your arrival at the rallys!
