These are typically noisey motors by design. Some days mine sounds like a bucket of bolts, other days not so bad. They seem noisier in the colder weather also, at least to me it does. I wouldn't really worry about it too much, they are a bullet proof motor for the most part.

A large nut will also work to unscrew the tubes, you dont even have to pull the spark plug out.

If I recall it's 22mm, and so any bolt with 2 nuts jammed on will make a allen wrench. If I am correct, then any bolt 7/8" SAE will work as well with the nuts jammed.

Another way is to hear it better.......... You can use any longer socket extension as a stethoscope. With one you place it in the area where you think the sound is loudest and place an ear on the rod to hear. Then move your ear away and move the rod again to another place you want to hear and or compare.

If you have a sloppy cam chain it will be heard really well.
