Replace Brake Pads

I tried to search this but no luck.

I was going to replace my front brake pads this weekend and saw a small clip or strange looking cotter pin on the small bolt the holds the pads in. It's wrapped around the bolt almost like a clip.

I could not figure out how to remove it without breaking the clip/pin.

So before I continue, can someone tell me how to replace the brake pads without breaking that pin or am I doing it completely wrong.
