Help nomad won't go in second gear

05 nomad was laid down in a hit and run. Lite damage itself to bike but it will not go into second gear any longer. Bike will switch between first and neutral only. What might it be and is it expensive to fix.

Take a look at this thread and read thru it, it might be informative?

You could have a look at the bell cranks up and behind the engine case cover. It isn't so apparent but there is 2 ball sockets and a rod that could be bent, and is your cheapest fix if it is.

Combined all these parts are bell cranks.

And how do the shifter levers look?

Shifter seems fine there is enough play in it. When trying to switch to second the neutral light will go out but it won't catch gear.

If it's an internal transmission problem, they have to split the case and that is expensive.

Do like Mac said, remove the left engine cover, and get down and look at the shifting linkage. It's a rod about 10" long that goes from the shaft that the shifters are mounted to, and goes back to the transmission. I hope this is your problem. If it was fine before it was laid down, and it was laid down on the left side, either the shifter rod, or the shift linkage may be bent.

Hopefully it did not damage the shifter drum or the shifter fork inside the tranny, That will require splitting the crankcase open.

I did not say to remove the engine cover and don't, not yet anyway... All that bell cranks stuff is open to the air, dirt and road grime... You need to get down on the ground hard and look up and in.....

Once I ran over a oak twig big enough to jam my bell crank... from the shifter pivot where both shifter levers are, follow the post part thru to the other side. Then see the snap on ball socket (Bell Crank) a rod connecting to another Bell Crank.

Make sure the rod is straight and not hung up on anything.

These bell cranks can be oiled from time to time, and or cleaned....

Don't un-do the lock nut though, or move the relation of the rod setting.

Wait! Are you trying to shift with the engine off and the bike not rolling?

Nomads have a neutral finder and I wonder about the method you are using...

If the key is ON and engine is not running it can be sort of stuck in 1st to only go to neutral.... It could be stuck in 2nd and then only go to neutral too if the bike isn't moving at about so fast as a man can run..

I have been stuck in 2nd a lot of times when I thought I had dropped into 1st but didn't.

For me that usually happens on some interstate rest area parking lots where I come off the interstate fast,, Think I made 1st gear and parked with out really getting into 1st.l

You have to try all of the above first, on a running bike. If its not the shifter linkage, you will have to go inside and check the drum and the forks.

This may go without say, but did you contact your insurance and file a report? This is an accident and depending on your coverage, it may be covered.

I really hate it when people come on here and get answers to fix their problems then never return to let us know if the problem was solved or if it was something else causing the problem.
Wheew, that was a long sentence.
