Turkey trivia

Wild turkeys are amazing birds. We have a lot of them here in Eastern Idaho and one local farmer shared this story with me. They had a hen and a brood of young living just inside the woods at the edge of a field near their house. They enjoyed watching the hen and chicks make their way along the edge of the field every day. One day a hawk swooped down and grabbed a chick and took off with it. The Momma hen turned on the afterburner and took off after the hawk in a straight line climbing until she caught the hawk and attacked it until it dropped the chick! No turkey dinner for that hawk.

Someone told me that wild turkeys are extremely powerful fliers and I have seen them zipping through the woods with no problem but until I heard this story I did not realize just how strong they are.
