Avon cobra tires question
Looking at the Avon website they do not even have a listing for the 1600 Nomad. That said, I found the sizes for the rear (AV72) to be either 180/60/16, or 180/70/16. The front (AV71) 150/80/16. Are these the right ones and which is the best for the rear?

Yeah I saw that too. You have to look under "custom". 180/70/16 works great on the rear of a 1600. 150/80/16 is the correct front tire size. If you are going to order the tires yourself, check the pricing here. I bought mine from these guys and this was the best deal I could find.

Avon cobra tires question
They don't list them for the Nomad, but the sizes most of us run are the stock sizes for the Triumph Rocket III Touring (2008 model). Here's a link to that page

Avon cobra tires question
Quote:
Ordered mine in Aug of last yr but only put them on a couple of months later than receiving them, because I was able to squeak out about 12,000 on the stocks stones, surprisingly...... Had Metzlers before and didn't like them. Had Elite II's and was thinking of going to elite III's when researching the cobras's. Anyway, I remember going back and forth with some members pre-august before I made my decision to go with the cobra's. Mileage max hasn't been discussed as far as I've seen because they only came out last yr. I'm waiting to hear that soon from some of you high mileage guys. OR.............maybe on my 5 or 6 week trip this summer I'll be the first to report. |

Avon cobra tires question
Doc
I'm following your advise on going with the Avon Cobra but just out of interest, here's the recommendation from Avon themselves as for which tire to put on the Nomad. I don't agree with their advise. I definately would not put on a smaller size tire on the rear--not to mention narrower. Even on the OEM I have lots of friends who have put on a rear tire that is 1 size up with no problems encountered. "Thank you for contacting Avon Tyres. Your bike comes stock with bias ply tires and it is usually recommended to stick with the OEM tire construction. I would recommend going with the Venom AM41 / AM42 bias ply tires. Front Venom AM41 150/80-16 71H 38-psi & Rear Venom AM42 160/80B16 81H 44-psi. This rear is a little narrower that your stock, but on your stock rim of 4.5’’ it will end up being 173 mm and will fit safely. It also has a higher load index than stock. If you have heard good things about the Cobra from other Nomad owners then you may choose to go with them, however it is not recommended by Avon and may void warranty. I believe your rim is a 4.5” and the Cobra AV72 180/70R16 is recommended for a minimum of a 5” rim. If you go with the radial Cobra’s use 38-psi front and 42-psi rear. Let us know if you have questions. Thank you for supporting Avon Tyres and ride safely. Jesse Priel Avon Customer Service c/o Hoppe & Assoc, Inc. PO. I bought mine here. The shipping is $25 for both to Louisiana. Had them in 3 days.

Avon cobra tires question
I have owned a lot of tires, as most have. There are good and bad models by every manufacturer. Most for a car swear by Michelin but the Avinity model sucked. The Cobras are very smooth and hug the road like a diaper on a babys ass. Time will tell with mileage and that is a biggie with the Nomad. But right now it would be the Cobras or the Elite 3s for me.

Avon cobra tires question
and may void warranty.
That sounds strange. Has anyone contacted Kawasaki to see if they take a position on changing to radial tires?

Avon cobra tires question
My local KAW dealer mounted my Cobra's. They didn't mention any issues.
I believe the 1500 Nomad's had narrower rims than the 1600. When I talked to the Avon rep the cobra's were recommended to me. No mention of voiding warranty.????????????? Everone worried about liability issues nowadays........ Quote:

Avon cobra tires question
Hi, There is a guy on the Delphi forum that has had 2 rear Cobras on his Nomad so far. He got 9,000 miles on the first one and the cords were showing by that time. He has 5,000 miles on the second one and it is wearing at the same rate as the first and he figures it will be done around the same time. He is going to E3's next time as they are cheaper but is considering a car tire.
