nomad hitch hauler

Well, I leave in 30 minutes to pick up my new 08.. FINALLY. My question.. I am getting a hitch put on and at times when I don't want to pull a trailer (which I don't have yet) I was thinking like a trunk box on a hitch haul type gig. How much weight can be back there like that? I also want to fab up a bracket that goes to it that will hold 2 sets of golf clubs.

I made a box for my bike. I can carry 2 gallons of gas or rain suits, tools and extras. The box and hitch frame weighs about 16 lbs empty. You can't tell it's on the bike so that little weight doesn't affect anything. Cheap but it works.

It's a cheap box I got in the Wal-Mart automotive section. It does lock(one on each side) but it's made of lightweight plastic. It is pretty sturdy. You could mount any type of box on it real easy. I just ran the main tube that plugs into the receiver and welded two cross pieces to support the box. It has 4 bolts holding it on. I also added two LED lights that plug into my trailer connector. If you mount a box that is any taller you will need lights on it. Mine is low enough the original brake light and tag can be seen from the rear but I added the other lights just for extra visibility.

Here's one for golf bags:

The one in this link would be easy to make:

This one is weird but will work:

Nice job Z. I'm sure it comes in handy for short runs to the store and such.

I would be ok with 50 lbs total in the box. My trailer tongue weight is about 23 when fully loaded so that is light and doesn't affect it at all. With the box on and loaded with my T-bag fully loaded it has probably 80lbs sitting behind the passenger.
