Have the airlines gone crazy?

My wife and I are flying to Europe and the middle East tomorrow, and when we tried to get our seat assignments, they charged $40 extra to have our seats next to each other.

I accepted luggage fees and such, but extra fees to sit next to each other?

I think the golden age of travel is over, we're on the down side now.

That's utterly ridiculous! The airlines are truly trying to nickle and dime the consumers in order to make up for their poor business practices. So did you pay the fees or figure you'll see her when you get on the plane?

I've never figured out the manner in which airlines are managed -- and obviously for the most part the industry's history hasn't been a model for business management -- unless you are studying how to run a company into bankruptcy.

Good luck on your trip. Hope you have an enjoyable time.

I fly all of the time and I gotta tell ya, it's getting to the point where I'd just as soon take a beating than head for another airport.

Dan,

I'm sure the $40 is in the noise level of the ticket price, and your wife's company is well worth it. Enjoy your trip cheapskate!

I spent four years working as a corporate travel agent. I booked about $1 million a year on average. Looking at that web link and his claims I would have to say that it sounds pretty bogus to me.

Gotta agree there. My wife would kill me if we sat next to each other on a flight, any flight. I am a firm believer that there are only two ways to fly.
1. So drunk I can pass out and sleep the whole way.
2. So hung over that I pass out and sleep the whole way.

I guess you could add sleeping pills or sedatives to the list but I figure number 1 and 2 are the reason there are bars in the airport, right?

Have a great trip Dan. My wife and I had been on a similar trip. Israel and back to Italy. Three weeks most enjoyable. Wish I had the bike in Israel though. DJ
