Grease zerk on steering

Hey all,

I read on Gadget's site about installing a grease zerk on the steering tube. Has anyone done this, and does it meet the need, or do you still need to take it all apart to lube it properly?

Doug

Grease zerk on steering

It seems like if Kawi did it to begin with it would change the cost of a nomad by $5, have a hole machined when the frame is built and have a zerk threaded in along the production line.

Best guesses on why this isn't done? A cheap Ujoint has one in trucks, why not an expensive steering stem on a motorcycle?

I don't have one, wish I did.

Grease zerk on steering

I did mine after the bearings went out @ 26000 km! There was a small wipe of grease on the top one and the bottom one was just red gunk. Stealer didn't want to Warranty it as I had taken it apart to add grease for its 25000 km service ( which I had to wait until 26000 km because I was on Holidays). He copped the attitude I should have taken it in @ the 25000 km mark even if I was on the road??? WTF!! Now I have the wobble so I guess he didn't tighten the bearings down enough!!! Man you can't win with Stealers!!!
Oh, the zerk idea is a great one!! I will be doing the Swingarm one this winter.

Grease zerk on steering

I did mine at around 24,000 miles, and like Rewindgy, my top one had a very, very small amount of grease on it, and the bottom was just brown (rusted) mush ::). The bottom one actually fell apart when I lowered the triple tree stem to get it out ???. And YES I did drill and tap a hole in the neck to put a grease fitting in. It took a whole tube of grease to fill the neck, but the bearings will be greased now. ;)
