Subject: [WindyCityVROC] Turn Signal issues

I have a 99 Nomad. Want to know how to disable the auto cancell
feature on the turn signals. They seem to cancell before I come to the
turn. I would rather deal with them manually. Any thoughts?

Rich

+1

I know mine will stay on indefinitely before I make a turn. My bike is an 07, maybe the older bikes self-cancel after a specific amount of time.

Disable the turn signal auto cancel feature

I have a '99... I turn mine off manually.... If I leave them on and let them self cancel, I eventually blow a fuse...

If there's a way to disable the feature, I'm in!

BD?

That's like removing the rear brake to save weight.

I've heard that if you replace the flasher unit with an automotive unit it will disable, although that's a viscous rumor and I really have no idea if that's where the self cancelling feature resides. Makes sense that it may though.

The auto cancel lasts 8 seconds on the '08 Nomads. That is about 6 seconds longer than the attention span of most of the cagers. I don't mind starting it again if I tripped it a little early. Better than letting it run forever like the clueless cager I followed today that left his blinker on for several miles. It stays on forever when I am stopped at an intersection, so there is some kind of movement sensor involved.

From the 2005-2008 service manual:

The canceling system consists of a battery, turn signal control relay, distance sensor, and turn signal switch. When the turn signal switch is pushed onto the right or left, the turn signals start flashing and the control relay starts counting off 8 seconds. At the end of this time, the control relay starts calculating distance traveled using pulses from the distance sensor in the speedometer. The control relay keeps working even after the turn signal switch was released and returned to the neutral position by spring force. When the motorcycle has traveled an additional 65 meters (213 feet), the control relay shuts off the current, turns off the turn signal lights, and resets itself.

In other words, after you start your turn signals you have 8 seconds. After that, as soon as you cover 213 feet the signals will cancel.

Since this is a function of the "control relay", if you were to replace this relay with another type of flasher which did not have the self-cancelling circuitry, then the self-cancelling feature would effectively be removed. Of course, you would have to find a flasher that would fit and also be compatible with the existing connector.

Manual says, or I read somewhere, that the Nomad auto cancel is linked to the odometer as well as the clock. Road mine a couple thousand miles before I discovered it was auto cancel because VN800B doesn't have one. Now, I've had to buy an after-market unit for the 800 because now I forget to turn that one off. Of course, the fitment chart was wrong and I have to send the unit back to BikerHiway and get the right one.

I really like the "self-cancelling" feature. Like Bob(Kodiac) said, when you turn it on, if you don't stop, it'll turn off after 8 seconds. But if you stop while the signal is already on, it will blink as long as you sit there, then as you start, when a total of 213 feet has been covered since you first switched it on, It will self-cancel.
I don't like riding mile after mile behind someone who leaves their blinker on, so I'm pretty sure they don't like it either, and it keeps me from looking like a dufuss.
