Deer Warning devices

Perhaps someone has a bit of experience or opinion about those inexpensive little gadgets that you can stick on your car / bike that generate a sound to scare away any deer heading your way..

I've seen some on a few bikes (Goldwings, a few Harleys) and got some from Wally World tonight... thing is I'm not sure where to put them (side of front fender ??? Ouch !) or if they'll even do any damn good.

I did a quick search here on KawaNOW but did not find anything..

Any thoughts please ??

Brian

(p.s. Just an FYI... those exact same things are sold in Australia to warn Kangaroos... I don't know if they really work on roo's either.. perhaps roo's have hearing like deer, or perhaps its just a piece of junk ! ;) )

Deer Warning devices

My company did a study on them and found they were more likely to attract a deer than to warn them away.....The company has well over a thousand vehicles and they did have interest in them as we had just gone through a bout of hitting animals. In the end they decided that there was just not enough proof to show that they worked at all.
for what it's worth

they will scare off kangaroos here in the states. I have yet to see a roo one while riding the bike

I had them on my truck and didn't see a difference. they say you have to be going over 35mph.
We have deer all over the campus, what I have noticed at work if I'm in my van which is quiet I can pass within several feet of the deer. If I'm in the schools truck which is somewhat loud they take off before I get near them.

My opinion is these are inexpensive. My other opinion is even that is a waste of time and money.

I would have to agree with a majority of the posts thus far that they are useless.

I defend my case on the fact that my step-father had them on his car and hit two deer at the same time as an entire "herd" of them jumped across the road in front of him. Obviously it didn't deter a single one of the "herd".

We took pictures of the front of the car that shows the carnage and right-there on the bumpers were the "deer-deterents" (un-damaged by the way).

I will have to see if I can find that pic. It has been ten years ago or so. I'll post it if I do.

I know deer hear my Drag pipes on my Suzuki and they usually run away. At the very least they stand at attention.

Unfortunately it has the same effect on humans. ;)

Can't quote any more of reliable source than you already have heard here, but I too have consistently heard from numerous people that they do not work.

I have often heard that they do more harm than good, as several people have told me that they can actually attract deer because of the high pitched frequency of the tone. Take that for what it's worth, though.

I have hunted derr all my life since I was old enough to lug a rifle. I was about 8 then. My Dad took me, in northern New England. This map below I have is just one long trip where I tode a Nomad from the East wet coast to that other one all nice and sunny.

I saw deer and damn near hit 2 on that trip and thar's deer AND skunks in every one of those states.

Don't hit one.

If engine and exhaust sound and lights aren't enough to get a deer's attention, I doubt a little whistle will. IMHO.

From the article I read by Fred Rau, deer hear in the same frequencies we do, so if you don't hear it, they don't. So basically, they don't work and it's a waste of money.

From my experience with the ones they make for spiders and mice I would stay away from them. I swear they attract more of them! Even had a spider build a web around one of them.
