most unusual farm animals

I was tooling along one of my favorite local roads when a loud cry caught my attention. At least I thought that is what I heard. I found a place to pull over and stopped my bike. I first checked my smartphone to see if it was the "roaring guitar" ring tone that I heard. Nope, that wasn't it. I turned around and got to where I thought I heard the sound and I heard it again, so I slowed and turned around. I pulled off the road and shut off my engine, but there wasn't a sound. I restarted the engine and I heard it again, so I shut the bike off and dismounted. It sounded like some kind of animal, but it was very loud; too loud to be a crow. There was a farm across the road and the sound seemed to come from that way. Again I heard the noise and it seemed to be coming from a shed where a tractor and hay wagon were parked.



I heard the noise some more and it was definitely coming from the shed and it was loud. I didn't see anybody at the house or barn that was part of the same property so I crossed the road and approached the shed cautiously. I peered into the darker interior of the shed and spotted something that looked like a large bird with a bright blue body perched up on the high side of the hay wagon. Working my way closer (visions of America's Funniest Videos clips with me being attacked by a huge colorful bird began eclipsing my curiosity, but I pressed on), I also noticed extremely long tail feathers. Holy Crap! A friggin' peacock!!! Okay, better not push my luck, I thought as I snapped a picture with my smartphone and retreated. I got back to my bike and took a picture of the shed and I heard another cry from the bird, but when I looked it was another one by the side of the barn. Somehow I am not too surprised as agriculture these days in Vermont is greatly diversified with organics and such.

They make good watch dogs

I was working down in the Rio Grande Valley years back and the people behind the motel had a bunch of them after about the third week I was ready to shoot all of them :(

They holler all night too when something is moving around. A neighbor about 1/4 mile away used to have several peacocks. We could hear them really well from that far.

They seem to be rather popular in the country around here, with people who can afford them. They are awful noisy when they get agitated.

The folks across the bayou from me have a home on a couple of acres. They have several peacocks. My grandmother kept a few on her dairy farm. Definitely good "watchdogs" with a distinctive alert tone.

Yep - peacocks, guineas, geese and donkeys all make great watch animals

Peacocks are awfully loud, and very distinctive. Beautiful but annoying (boy I wonder what tangent this thread will go on now!).
