synthetic difference on performance

I have read numerous posts on when owners switch over to synthetic oil on their Nomads. Some see no difference, while others actually have complained of noisier engines after the switch. I on the other hand changed mine out last weekend ( Have 3000 km on the bike ) and could not believe the difference in performance and sound. The bike shifted smoother, ran quieter, way quieter, to the point where I almost was wishing my Cobra slash cuts where a little louder. I am definitely sold on synthetics......

I'm with you voyager. Synthetic in mine for the last year. Engine sounds good and shifts well. Course the V+H exhaust kinda makes every other noise dissappear!

Rotella Syn is about $17 a gallon at Walmart and the Supertech filter is about $2.50 so about $20 for the whole 9 yards.

I just purchased a jug of the Rotella T dino oil yesterday here at Canadian Tire, $14.25 and thats with my daughters store discount. The synthetic oils all seem to be in the $35.00 to $40.00 price range. I can't justify spending $50.00 on a bike oil change if I have a choice. If I could get the oil for the prices you guys pay in the US I would probably use it.

Yep, Ringadingh is right, synthetic oil runs around $30-$40 a jug. I put in the dealer oil ( Kawi 10-40 ) because I get a %15 discount for buying the bike there. We do get hosed up here in the great white north on our prices.

Oh ya, my only political comment on this forum will be " don't shop Walmart "

With full syn you should get more miles per gallon too....

IT IS A REAL WISE IDEA to change the measly amount of rear end oil at every oil change!
That includes the first 600 mile service. The capcity is 6.76 US ounces!, or 200ml. That is almost nothing!

IMO this should be drained out on the side stand and filled ALSO on the sidestand, in other words tilted.. DO NOT over fill, or try to over fill this part of the bike ever!

IF you fill this with the bike up straight it will be slighty over full.. If you feel the need to be really fussy, maybe place a wooden block under the side stand, and STILL have the bike partly tilted.
.................................................. .................................................. ................. ......................

ICE... If you are doing any oil change yourself, firget the normal oil drain. I have had a 1500 and have a 1600 engine, and the best place to drain the engine oil from is the filter screen bolt. It is lower than the regular drain and you get all the fun of cleaning the screen too.

I have never ever put a wrench to the regular drain yet, and probably never will.

The location is towards the left rear under case.

Synthetic is better, and almost everyone will notice a little difference in better performance, but you folks must remember that whenever you change out old oil for fresh oil, the bike is going to immediately run smoother and faster just because you've got clean oil. That makes a big difference without even changing types or brands.

Same here. And the Bosch 3323.

Just changed the oil Friday night. It always run quieter and cooler after an oil change. Changing the coolant this next weekend.

The biggest advantage to synthetics (probably only advantage) is protection against thermo viscosity breakdown. Doesn't fail at super high temps. Lubricity is no better. If it was your clutch would slip.

BD, That's why I'm changing over to Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50 at my 4K mile service. It's so darn hot down here in the summer. A short stay at a traffic light will kick the fan on much less getting hung up in traffic for a while. Luckily, that hasn't happened yet.

Full Syn oils have reduced friction in general compared to dino oils, there fore a engine can turn with less resistance. Even if this is 100:1 less that dino oil it has to have a long tern effect on distance traveeled on a given amount of fuel.

Doing the same to the rear gears, has to have a similar effect.

I would have no idea how to measure that.

My 2 cents.. Synthetic is MORE stable then Dino oil.. Doesn't carbon up like Dino oil... It is better for the first start ups. leaves alittle film on the cyl. walls... so tome a better choice,, BUT as long as you change oil regular all oil is good ... I added Mobile1 MX4T to my lawn Mower,,,just to see what it does,,,I used to refill the tank once with gas to finish my yard! now I do the whole yard and trim by the street!!! on 1 TANK w/left over gas.....So that tells me it works as stated!!! ROTELLA Synthetic IS NOT a TRUE Synthetic oil..it is a PREMIUM base DINO oil..w/a refined change to the dino oil to change its DNA,,and an leagally be called a synthetic..still has the same faults of reg. dino.....it is a GREAT oil !!!!works well..
