did my first gravity drop at work

Huh?! Okay, I deliver heating oil and a few of our trucks are fitted with plumbing to bypass the meter and pump and just deliver a tank full of product like emptying the bathtub. The whole idea is that you get an order to deliver 3000 gallons so you load exactly 3000 gallons as shown on the meter at the terminal. Then you drive to the customer's tank and connect the hose to the fitting on the side of the truck and you fit a nozzle that clamps onto the fill pipe of the tank and then fit the hose to the nozzle. You open the air valves for the pod or pods on your truck so that they equalize the pressure and the oil can flow. You also push in another air valve and open the ball valve and the nozzle has little windows so that you can see when the oil has finished flowing. The advantage is that instead of pumping through the meter @65 gallons per minute and taking almost 45 minutes to empty the truck it only takes 10-15 minutes to do a gravity drop. Even though it is a very simple procedure the potential for a spill is always in the back of your mind. Normally you would stick the tank to check the level and using a tank book determine what is in the tank. If for instance there is 48" in the tank and it is a 96" 10,000 tank, then it has 5000 gallons in it. All tanks need 10% for expansion so we subtract 1000 gallons from 10,000 and get 9,000 then we subtract what is in the tank; 5,000 and get 4,000 gallons needed to fill the tank. So then we would load exactly that amount in the truck and do a gravity drop

Get a magazine, sit in the cab, and let the oil run through the meter. And wait, just like a government job then.
